I might get to hang out with this guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yannis_Stavrou) in a couple of weeks. He's an artist in Athens--here's his site: http://www.yannisstavrou.gr/index-e.htm

See if the Greek will paint a don quixote on black velvet for you. That seems to be about the league he's in. Local landscapes to sell to the turistas ain't necessarily "fine art.";)

athens is a lot of cool times, imo. the plaka is cool, and mets is a neat neighborhood. if you have to take the train from whatever the scummy port town on the Adriatic is called (forget), be prepared for a hot sweaty, crowded, very unpleasant ride (and i have a high tolerance for this kind of stuff while travelling). paying extra for the air-conditioned bus is worth thinking about. that train is a bad gig.

edit: Patras is the Greek port town, Brindisi Italy is pretty scummy as well. However, if for whatever reason you on this route. the island of Ithaka is cool, relatively cheap, and easy from Patras. it's not the showboat postcard Aegean islands like Mykonos or whatever etc....but, it's relaxed and the home of Odysseus, obviously. and you can swim where Lord Byron used to take his daily swims while blowing his fortune helping the greeks fight the turks. people are really friendly and rent a room for cheap and chill. drink ouzo and eat fish stuffed that day stuffed with garlic and herbs. good times.
