Debbie Wert is proud of her husband and grateful to those who tried to save his life.

The widow of a Cherry Point Marine who drowned Saturday while rescuing two boys in Atlantic Beach, Wert expressed her gratitude to everyone who pitched in.

“We had strangers praying with us and women who took care of the children and got them towels and comforted them while we waited for them to bring their (d)ad back to life,” she said in a statement released by Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

Michael Wert, 36, of Alexander Road aboard Cherry Point, swam to the rescue of a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old boy struggling against the tide at Fort Macon State Park’s beach access.

Wert’s daughter entered the water with a body board and helped bring the two boys to the shore, according to park spokesman Charlie Peek. Wert had been carried by the tide and was floating face-down when two park attendants with a rescue board returned him to shore.

“Mr. Wert went into the water, reached the two boys and started to swim to shore with them,” Peek said. “He apparently got into trouble swimming.”

The incident was reported at 5:26 p.m. Saturday, when the water temperature was about 60 degrees.

Fort Macon park rangers and Atlantic Beach paramedics performed CPR, but were unable to revive Wert, who was pronounced dead at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.

“Mike was a very detail-oriented Marine,” Debbie Wert said in her statement. “He went out of his way to make sure everyone was taken care of here or abroad…He was very proud to serve his country in any way possible. He was very family oriented. He enjoyed going fishing and took the kids fishing all of the time.”

Michael Wert is survived by his widow and three children.

He was a master sergeant in the Marine Corps and worked as acting intelligence chief for Marine Headquarters Squadron 2. He joined the Marines in September 1989, according to Cherry Point’s public affairs office.

“Michael Wert was a credit to the Marine Corps, the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and Cherry Point,” read a statement from the air station. “He was well liked in his unit, and was known for his willingness to help anyone. He will be sorely missed.”

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Cherry Point.
