My 1st thread by the way - This issue has seemed to have dropped off the radar screen over the last week or so. Isn't he due to sign or veto tomorrow?

Woo-hoo. More irrelevant immigration reform talk. Until the Feds do something, all of these other bills coming out of states and cities amount to little more than pis*sing in the wind.

Irrelevant or not, my question was why last week it was such a big issue with the local news channels and newsok.com(they had polls and all), but now there is no reporting to be found. Just found it interesting.

That generated millions of dollars of revenue for Oklahoma that the tribes could arguably have kept to themselves without the diplomatic work of the Henry administration...moron...

Millions of dollars less than was projected before the compacts were executed. He also promised $300 million a year from his "education" lottery. We're getting less than half that.

He really gives a stemwinder of a speech, doesn't he? Yawn. But you go right on defending ol' Brad, the trial lawyers' best friend. And since you're given to throwing around ad hominem insults, I'll take my turn....liberal!

I got a chuckle out of the fact that boran had a statement printed in teh OU paper saying that next years fees and tuition are going up cause there were not enough funds from the state. But governor, your lottery was going to solve all of the states education financial short falls.

So basically, many Oklahoma family's are not smart enough to make the decision to gamble or not?

Basically, yes. Just drive through the parking lot of one of the larger casinos (we've got three huge ones in Tulsa--Creek, Osage and Cherokee), and check out the license plates of the patrons. 90% Oklahomans.

We've made it easy for them to gamble their wages away. Aren't we great?

Nobody's holding a gun to their head and making them gamble. Those that can't control themselves would be gambling on-line, with a bookie, or casino's in other states. Ain't personal accountability a bitch?

I'm sure Gov Henry's feeling the pain of being called an enabler.

Better to tax stupid people than me. :) The more they pay, the more I wouldn't have to. Hell, I say we open up casinos for non-tribal land.

mikeelikee
5/10/2007, 10:53 PM
Not going to happen, PrideTrombone. The tribes won't agree to it. They bent Henry and Meachem over a big ol' barrel with this compact deal, and they don't intend to surrender their current advantage.

We sew, we reap. Thank God, in 2008, for the first time in the history of the state, we should have a Republican Senate President Pro Tempore.

Do you have any data to back up your assertion that Oklahoma families are being devastated by Indian gaming...or is it just a feeling you have?

I'm reasonably familiar with the customer demographics of the gaming facilities in and around Tulsa. The majority of patrons are well over 45 y/o. Over a third are retired. That pretty much puts them out of the category of folks who need to be buying baby formula and diapers instead of playing a few slots to pass the time.

Also, not to introduce facts or anything, but Indian gaming pre-dated the Class III gaming compact in Oklahoma. Under federal law, all the compact Henry signed did was to allow casino-style banked card games and Vegas style slots in tribal gaming facilities, which polls indicated the people of Oklahoma wanted.

Just so you know, if Henry hadn't signed, the tribes could have petitioned the Secretary of Interior to allow class III anyway, and under that scenario, Oklahoma might not have gotten it's 6% of the net revenues from class III gaming as it now does under the compact. That amounts to literally millions of dollars that goes straight to education in Oklahoma under terms of the compact.

In short, gamble or you've proven you hate children

It's not allowed under federal law, unless it is on land bought by a tribe and placed into trust status for that tribe by the Secretary of the Interior -- which then legally converts it to Indian Country.

Alternatively, there is nothing to stop the legislature from making casino gambling in Oklahoma, but if the state does that, it stops getting 6% from the tribes because that exclusivity is a term of the tribal-state compact.

Thank you, counselor. It's not surprising that you're a fan of the guv. The only real evidence I have to-date is anecdotal. Actual Tulsa families that have been torn apart by one family member's addiction. Yes, I realize not everyone who gambles becomes addicted, but a certain percentage do, and under what provision of the compacts are the tribes obligated to assist with the costs of treating these problems?

Gov Henry is a *********, not because of the gaming compact but because he tries to sit in the nice seats when his tickets are elsewhere. At the OU- OSU game in Norman, before he was elected, he and his wife were going down damn near each aisle under the overhang asking if anyone was sitting in the empty seats he saw. Some guy yelled at him to buy his own damned tickets. People with gambling 'addictions' are *********s as well.

Thank you, homey. Yes, I'm glad to hear the tribes will be participating. We're going to need it. However, no, I'm not happy about the fact our state has been governed by one party for its first century of existence, and the ingrained patronage is sickening. To wit, Gene Stipe.

Now, we are in the midst of two terms under a feckless governor, who has finally been called out to show his liberal inclinations, even if it is a little late in the game.

You have made me seriously think about this. Everytime I buy a six pack(okay, a twelver), I have spent 10.89(or 8.99 a case for some natty) on an addiction, that could have went to a utility bill or whatever. How come Anheiser, Marlboro or US Tobacco doesnt have any type of provisions to take care of us 'holics? By the way, what the **** does feckless mean?
