View Full Version : Things your poker buddies do because they saw it on T.V.

I've been in a fairly regular game for years. Nothing big (I think the biggest night anyone ever had was about $100). But, it's always been something fun, laid back, and a good way to stay in touch with friends.

Well, about 3 years ago, I noticed that the game had "changed". Some of the guys were taking it a little more serious. Since 3 of the guys had recently gotten married, I assumed it was that early marriage "guilt" about being away from your bride. I figured it would go away.

Well, not only did it not go away, it's slowly gotten worse. I'm talking about guys getting very serious over a $5.00 pot.

It finally dawned on me after last weekend that it's all because of televised poker. There are 3 guys (aforementioned), that play like they are on ESPN every time we get together. It's pretty funny now that I think of it. Among some of the things they do, these are my favorite:

1. Sunglasses at the table
2. Just lifting their cards enough to barely see the corner number (like they are playing for thousands and don't want anyone to peek).
3. Standing up on the turn card (when the pot is like $2.50).
4. Listening to their MP3 player during the game.

It used to be a fun way to drink, play cards and shoot the shat with the fellas...now it's like a comedy routine. I should video the next one and post it on YouTube...people would probably think it was just a sketch or scripted.

i'm surprised it's been together that long and the limits haven't creeped up, or gone away

Oh, there's not really a limit, but most of the guys don't make a ton of money, and have families...so we have always kept it realistic.

Besides, here in Denver, if you want to get into a money game, you can go to Blackhawk (about 20 minutes from Denver) and gamble all you want.

When my friends and I play(don't have any friends really, just acquaintances), they get pizzed because when I'm small blind, I put out the big blind bet. What difference does it make? I don't care if I have 4-8 unsuited, for another .50 cents, I'm in to at least see the flop! Who you think you is, Phil Ivey or sumpn?

this seems like a good place to point out that I schooled Doleo in the first and last Soonerfans poker tournament on my way to the bracelet.

ok there wasn't really a bracelet...but I did win.

You just described 3/6 limit at Riverwind. These guys tilt REALLY easily. Also, my home poker game in Tulsa is like this, 3 guys (and me) playing really tough, 3 people who really don't give a **** about 5 dollars.

1. Sunglasses at the table

People that do this at 3/6 limit are usually big fish. I can make an extra $10k/year from these guys alone. Besides, you lose more than you gain from shades.

2. Just lifting their cards enough to barely see the corner number (like they are playing for thousands and don't want anyone to peek).

That's just how you're supposed to do it. People that put their cards below the plane of the table can cheat very easily.

3. Standing up on the turn card (when the pot is like $2.50).

Ok, this is weird. You should never have to do this because you should be good enough to have more than $2.50 to go all in with. ;)

4. Listening to their MP3 player during the game.

I do this all the time too. I even offer others at my game to listen with me. Personally, I like to have some blues playing on the radio at my game.

in a serious game, you use the shades to watch other people and to maybe look like you aren't paying attention

the mp3 player can either be to keep from getting bored, or to make people think you aren't listening

getting up? well, yeah that's kinda dumb on a $5 pot ;)

oh and Brat, i'd pwn j00

I usually **** people off because I usually play with any cards. But, when there are 5 people in a hand and nobody was smart enought to raise the big blind, I'll call with a 7-2. You never know how beautiful that flop will be.

well yeah, if you can limp in, you might as well see a flop.

I had a hawt chick in a bikini spying on all your cards from a hotel room behind you.

I hate losing.

Some of you missed the point. I'm not talking about a game that is serious. That would be different. These are all guys that have been playing for years with small pots. A few of these guys SUDDENLY became world poker tour players.

The point of the game has never been to win money, it's always been a good excuse to get together with the guys without everyone being distracted by their girlfriends/wives or wive's girlfriend.

Some folks wear glasses because you can see a persons iris dialate when they are lying/bluffing...

I'm just sayin'

It's called a "tell".

Also...if your gonna play and you like to play at the casino...what's wrong with sharpening your skillz with your buds before putting up the bigger dollars at the casino....?
