We've got a momma and a daddy mallard hanging around the house, mostly by the pool. I think they are looking for a place to put their eggs and have babies.

Any of you folks know about duck nesting, and how can we help? food for them etc?

Wild bird seed, though ducks can harbor some diseases.

My parents have a pair that hang around their yard this time of year. They get corn from the Bethany Feed Store, that seems to be what they like.

It would be absolutely hysterical if they decide to nest in your daughter's playhouse.

I've taken one and will post it tonight. After their swim in the pool, they
got up in a freshly mulched flower bed and took a nap. Slickdaughter loves it!

It would, and she wouldn't be upset at all. She just giggles at them, and goes "quack quack quack".

Maybe I should teach her AFLAC.

mallards are omnivores. They'll eat cracked corn (that's probably the easiest to get, and one of their favorites), grains, seeds. They'll also eat bugs, worms, snails, small fish, algae... You can feed them bread and such, but they'd prefer other things. They might like chopped hard-boiled egg.

I would avoid trying to tame them or feed them by hand--it's probably a better bet to leave food for them and watch from afar. It's safer for the ducks if you don't let them get used to humans.

If you want to encourage them to nest there, you could always put out some bedding material in the yard. Dryer lint or that fluffy stuff they sell for hamster cages might be good. They might like shredded paper, too.

Really, the deciding factor for the ducks will be how safe they are from predators and the elements, and if there is water (for drinking and swimming) somewhat nearby and a good source of food.

well, to people they might be pooping wherever, but they don't generally poop in their water, food, nests, or on themselves. I've never seen a water bird poop in the water. Maybe flying OVER the water, they might. But I don't think they would while they're swimming.

cracked corn--go to the bird seed aisle or go to a feed and seed store of some sort. just plain ol' dried kernels of feed corn.

Must be that time of year. We had these two in the yard yesterday. The dog was VERY concerned about this.

This keeps getting better. The ducks like to sit in the flower bed just outside our kitchen table windows.

Late yesterday, the female wa ssitting there all alone, and slickwife tells me
"look down by the lake, the male keeps chasing off the other males"

Sure enough, he was down there chasing other males away. He'd lower his head and ram after them, it was priceless.

I will try to get some camcorder footage of this. priceless.
