Did anyone else watch the French Presidential Debate?
It was pretty interesting, Sarkozy (who is just a few hours away from winning the election) is described by the French and European media as some sort of raving crazy right-winger, but he'd be described as a liberal Democrat over here. He is, however, pro-America and anxious to employ an array of economic reforms (such as changing the 35 hr work week).

Royal, the woman Socialist candidate, is off her damned rocker. Hearing her answers on economics was a bit like hearing a 6 year old try to come up with something intelligent to say. She's a smart woman I'm sure but she has no freaking clue how to create a healthy economy. She actually blamed Sarkozy (he's currently head of hte Interior Ministry that is responsible for the national police force) for the rape of a female police officer which would be like blaming the Director of the FBI for the rape of an agent in Dallas. To remedy this problem, she proposes that EVERY female civil servant be assigned an "escort" to take her to work and home each day. This includes police so presumably the country would have to hire enough people to act as escorts for EVERY female civil service employee including the cops themselves!

It was a pretty interesting debate all and all....Royal got a little off her rocker and heated and Sarkozy kept saying, "you need to calm yourself woman!"

I didn't watch it, but I did see some news reports about it.

She's wacked out for sure. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if the French voted her in.

But they didn't, Sarkozy is the projected winner with something like 54%.

On the one hand, I like Sarkozy but on the other hand I'm anxious to see the French continue to fail.

Scratch that, projections are up to 55% with Royal at 45%

That's a 10 pt loss for the explicit socialists!

From my understanding you can't go by what the French polls say as they are usually not correct.

Maybe they'll get it right this time. You never know with the French.

Can you imagine dealing with that woman if she DOES get elected? I don't think there's enough Lithium in the world for her.

It would be bad horrible yes. The polls have been closed now for seven minutes, but by all accounts Sarkozy is the winner and it's not even close.

I'm not sure if French Presidential candidates typically have a concession speech, so I'm waiting to see if Royal has officially conceded yet.

I saw the highlights on FNC...that French chick must've been PMS'ing like I've never seen before.

She'd have been perfect for those pussies had she won...oh well. Maybe some sense of normalcy will return to France after the last decade with Prissy Chirac.

Chirac was the epitome of French normalcy which is the problem. France has been who France is for many many decades now. Sarkozy was elected, partially, because he promised reforms that in essence would shake things up a bit.

So they reality is they're actually going from normalcy to supposedly radical change.

Also, it bears repeating that the Tories picked up several seats recently in the last round of British Parliamentary elections.

Its ironic that the French PEOPLE are electing a tough on terrorism, tough on crime, pro American president over a socialist.

While at the same time we are turning into france and all the media is excited about the first US women President who is also A Socialist.

Come to think of it, the way we fight wars now we may be more like france than I thought.

These political trends happen in waves both here and over there. Sometimes the trends match up, for example, in the 80s when Reagan was in office here, Thatcher in Britian, and Kohl in Germany. The 1990s saw Europe going more liberal with Clinton elected here and later Blair in Britian. Europe seems to be swinging back toward the right while we're swinging over to the left.

Paris is the biggest damned **** hole. I'm not all that unopposed to having let the Germans keep it if they really wanted it that bad. I guarantee you they'd run the place better than the French themselves have.

The scariest thing about Segolene Royal was her prediction that all manner of riots and violence would erupt if Sarkozy were to be elected.

I hope that is just desperation speaking and not a call to arms. If she thinks she thinks that she can agitate the disenfranchised to violence without near anarchy resulting she is completely delusional.

Oh, wait... she is completely delusional. Her remarks about the violence really are pretty frightening.

Royal is a former environment minister and unmarried mother of four who hoped to become France's first female president. She promised to keep welfare protections strong and raise the minimum wage. Her defeat marks the third straight loss for the Socialists in presidential elections.

You know, if this guy would deploy a battalion of the French Foreign Legion to Iraq the week after he is inaugurated, that would do more to restore good will between the US and France than anything I could think of. It would also steal a lot of thunder from the defeato-donkeys here at home.

But that would be a no-win situation for the French.
A. Bad - They just get a bunch of FFL troops killed for nothing.
B. Worse - They kick *** and make Iraq a French protecterate, a la Algiers, which, under French law, gives the Iraqis the right to emigrate to France which already has more Muslims than they're happy with.
