He died my last year at OU. The only musician I ever thought "I'll catch him next time he's in town." He never made it back. :(

sucks. i was driving through the Texas panhandle between Amarillo and Dalhart/DUmas on state highway 287? the day i heard about his death. the funny thing is it's hard to get FM radio out there and i found this station that played 3 Neil Young songs in a row...and i thought, jeez, maybe Niel Young died.

and about a half hour later the same station announced SRV died.

one the FEW gringo tapes we could ever have in one of the kitchens i worked in (the best pirate ship ever) that the vatos didn't "make disappear"....was SRV Texas Flood, the Doors Greatest, and a James Brown greatest.

I'll never here Pride and Joy and not think about cleaning the kitchen with the vatos.

and Buddy Guy says SRV brought back the blues. BG was driving a tow truck into the 80's, as arguably the greatest living bluesman alive.

and for people who like SRV: i suggest you check out Elmore James and Albert King...probably along with Jimi his two biggest influences.

I saw Albert King about 3 months before he died, playing the flying V. i'm a cross cut saw, sawing across your logs.

I remember hearing on the radio at first (at what seemed liked forever) they were saying it was possible that SRV, Eric Clapton, and Robert Cray all died together. There were conflicting reports about who actually got on the helicopter after the show.

They kept saying this is gonna be worse than Buddy, Ritchie, Big Bopper, etc...

I saw SRV open for Huey Lewis and the News at the Zoo Amphitheater in 1984, the first concert of the season and was packed since that was when Sports was a big hit for Huey Lewis. SRV was still somewhat unknown at that time, it was right around the time that Texas Flood broke big. I always wanted to see him again but never did.

it ain't a throwdown thread.

the allmans got rich and made great music.

and: all those guys rifffing playing muddy and john lee hooker and chicago legends riffs who all got ripped off by chess records. they had to wake to fact they were making it worse than better. when it came to proprietary music rights.

Saw SRV open up for the Who (also with the Fab T-birds) at the Cotton Bowl, and then again right before he died, at the Civic Center. I was in the drive-thru at the Taco Bell at Classen and Sheridan when I heard it on the radio. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Felt like somebody kicked me in the junk.

And I also remember the brief speculation about Clapton and Robert Cray. I'm happy to report that I saw them both from about 20 feet away just a couple of months ago, and they're doing just fine, thank you very much.

Interesting thread, Doc. I saw SRV at the floating stage in Tulsa about 3 months before he died. I almost didn't go because it was the night before my last finals of my college career. Man, am I glad I went now. That was an amazing concert. I don't recall doing too well on the final, but it was SO worth it.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was greatness! I'm actually listening to "Little Wing" right now. Probably my favorite SRV song.

I saw SRV in 1983 open for Gary Myrick. What an odd billing that was.

The thing about SRV is that he was very respectful to the legends that built the music he played and most respected him for paying homage to them after he attained success. I saw an interview with him once that he wished he could write a song as powerful as the songs of others that he played, he was a very humble guy from all accounts.

There are a bunch of different club recordings floating around this town with all sorts of legends of blues jamming with him at different venues and times.

The reason why he was on tour with Huey Lewis is they were big fans of him and that was their largest tour so he (and blues) got all kinds of exposure to mainstream rock fans that he wouldn't have normally.

yeah, like the thing with Buddy Guy driving a truck in the 80's, SRV helped bring that music back into prominence

if Buddy Guy was cool with him, that's good enough for me :D

SRV's version has no vocals though. That is why I like it more. Just mellow *** guitar.

If you haven't heard it in a while...pull up 'Riviera Paradise'.

Beautiful, deelishus, drippy awesomeness.

We ate lunch at Hut's Hamburgers (http://www.cwrl.utexas.edu/~russell/students/spr06/huts2/menu.html) today and sat in the old stage area, right above our table was a pic of SRV wearing a Hut's t-shirt.

That's not even playing guitar anymore. I don't know what to call it, but he's more than just playing that thing.

I saw him open for the Moody Blues back in '83. I didn't even know who he was then. The amp on his guitar was turned up so loud you couldn't even hear him sing.

I was in awe. I had no idea anybody could play a guitar like that.
