When I think of fictional Oklahoman's I think of Tom Joad. I'm just curious as to who actual Oklahomans think of when they think of fictional Oklahomans.

He has no name but he's married to Betty Lou Thelma Liz

He was born in Oklahoma,
His wife's name's Betty Lou Thelma Liz
And he's not responsible for what he's doing
Cause his mother made him what he is.

And it's up against the wall Redneck Mother,
Mother, who has raised her son so well.
He's thirty-four and drinking in a honky tonk.
Just kicking hippies asses and raising hell.

Brian Keith in An Officer and A Gentleman. The source of that godawful "you don't look like a steer to me" line. That guy is actually from TN, I think. I remember that portrayal as a particularly ugly stick in the eye to OK.

When I stepped out into the bright sunlight, from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman, and a ride home.

i'd say Stand Waitie in Harold Keith's Newberry Award winner: Rifles For Waitie.

that's some pretty heavy **** for a kid's book.

or: Pretty Boy Floyd in the Woody Guthrie tune.

edit: yeah, i know i'm not going to win.

yer image link didn't work here seems.

anyway, i reread Rumble Fish a year or so ago...and it's a very interesting book. in terms of it's "references" and staged tragedies. pretty heavy trip for a kids book. you can read it in an hour....but it's dark.

i doubt you could read something like that in middle school, today?

i would not want to teach it to 6th graders.

Interestingly, the burger joint that they frequent at the end of the movie is the (now destroyed) Tastee Freez in Owasso across from Ator field where the Rams used to play football until the mid 90s. I saw my 1st football game ever there. Good Times.
