stoopified
5/1/2007, 10:37 AM
The two most famous Oklahomans of all time IMHO were Will Rogers and Jim Thorpe but they both have been dead many years now.So the question is who is now the most famous Oklahoman living today?James Garner? Gary Busey?Vince,Reba,Garth,or Toby? Clay Bennett? One of our FIVE Miss Americas? My personal nominee is Ron Howard actor turned director, love his work.

I think you need to differentiate between famous in the U.S. and famous throughout the world. Brad Pitt, Shannon Miller, Will Rogers, Ron Howard, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Nancy Lopez, and yes, even Wayne Coyne, are famous even in other parts of the world.

People like Toby Keith, football players/coaches etc., are very famous in America, but not famous at all worldwide.

No doubt. I saw her at a Hornets game a few weeks ago with her "husband," who's pretty famous in his own right. It was a game where AD and Jamaal Brown were both in attendance. I think it was the game where NBA Hall of Famer Willis Reed was honored. Chris Paul is pretty big these days himself. But I told the guy who was at the game with me, after everyone else was introduced, that the most famous athlete from a worldwide standpoint was going unnoticed in the stands.

I'm not even sure Wayne Coyne is all that famous in Oklahoma.I was just going to ask who the heck is he?

Also for me the definition of Oklahoman is someone born here or who has lived here for a good portion of their lives. Therefore Brad Pitt would qualify as would Aikman(although I'd just as soon forget him).

Ok since no one wanted to tell me.I looked up Coyne.Hate to say it but until the D.O. ran the article about them getting an alley named after them I'd never heard of THE FLAMIN' LIPS.

That was a really cool site BRJ ,my only gripe is it doesn't tel you who was born here or if they are still alive. Many names I recognize.Joan Crawford Floored me.Was she born in Lawton or just lived there.IIF she lived there ,why?I mean I was born there and later lived there from '67-'74 because my dad was stattioned at Ft. Sill but why would anyone voluntarily live there?

To get back to the point who is the famous Oklahoman(nationally and internationally) alive? How about a top 5?

5 Toby Keith
4 Garth Brooks
3 James Garner
2 Ron Howard
1T Nadia,Shannon Miller (Nadia has lived here long enough to qualify and she is a world figure)
