What's a decent small caliber rifle for killing varmits?

I'd put my money on a 22-250 or a 220 swift. Both fire rounds that are .22 caliber & have a muzzle velocity of over 4k FPS. These rounds also are soft tipped so they don't penetrate but fragment and tumble.

If you want very affordable ammo that is good for this kind of stuff, I'd suggest anything chambered in .223 Remington.

I think SB68 is right, though. 22-250 is an awesome varmit round. Some of my buds at work own these rifles and they will shoot pencil erasers at 100 yards.

The Nikon Buckmaster 6x18 40mm scope is an awesome peice of glass for a great price (around $300)

I used one today at the 300 yard range and would've had absolutely no problem seeing a prairie dog.

What makes are a 243 or 22-250 or 220 Swift?

Edit: Does Ruger make a decent rifle? They had them on special at Scheeles the other day.

Most of the larger gun makers have rifles in those calibers. My 22-250 is a Remmington.

IMO, Ruger makes an exceptional rifle. .243's, .270's & .30-06 rifles are good for hunting while the .220 & the 22-250 are good killin' rifles--meaning the varmit rifles pack such a high velocity it destroys a lot of tissue.

Maybe I'll just get a side by side 4/10. Those are pretty effective too, according to my cousin anyway.

I just got my Marling 30-30 out the other day. Looks like it's still in good shape.

Maybe I'll buy some ammo for it........just in case SF.com decides to invade a small country.

All the alibers mentioned(except the 30-30) would be good for varmints but I'd take a hard look at the .17 hmr
It is a rim-fire caliber but an absolute tack driver, with little to no kick. I've talked to guys that regularly kill coyotes at close to 200 yards with it. The owner of our local gun shop took a group to SD(I think that was the state) and they killed several hundred prairie dogs, he loves the caliber. The ammo is very CHEAP in comparison to others too.
