I started thinking about this while listening to an oldies countdown on the radio awhile back.Isaw a countdown on VH-1 as well and they had a lot of songs I had never even heard of.I will first qualify my choice with the fact that I am 47 and think 99% of rap fails to qualify as music. My nomination for ultimate one-hit wonder is BRANDY by Looking Glass( circa 1974).

Dean, the stones also did Sympathy for the Devil, so they are a two hit wonder.

Satisfaction by Otis Redding....

Brandy is a good tune.

Escape Club: Wild, Wild West. (not a good tune, and really bad effort at "social comment").

possibly Jesus Jones: Right here, right now--another ******y anthematic attempt to be politically relevent that manages to suck out loud at the same time.

I felt a little tired, so I watched Miami Vice

I walked the dinosaur, I walked the dinosaur

that VH1 list is crap. a lot of those bands have decent work or some cred.....beyond being a "hit" band.

for instance, the Tom Tom Club are Tiny Weymouth and Chris Frantz of the Talking Heads. Was (not Was) is accomplished producer Don Was (Bob Dylan, the Stones, Iggy Pop, Paul Westerberg, B-52's, Waylon, BB King, Al Green, etc).

typical Baby Boomer nonsense from vh1.

Faith No More was a pretty decent group as well.
Sir Mix-a-lot had a TON of credibility before "Baby Got Back." No, seriously-SWASS was one of THE albums to own in the early 90s.

Faith No More had two incarnations. the first was a indie "hit" "We Care A lot"....with a diff frontman who was kicked out of the band for heroin i think. the "epic" version with Mike Patton later recorded "Angel Dust" which was an underrrated record, most real indie press liked a lot. Patton also fronted Mister Bungle with avant jazz legend John Zorn.

Well, according to wikipedia it was "You Better You Bet" but they don't have US single chart rankings for The Who before 1981 which is weird and obviously when all of their good stuff was released. So, I don't know.

That was the other song I was thinking of... Thanks!

Oh yeah. The song "Who Are You" which is now the them of my fave show CSI.

"Lunatic Fringe" by Red Rider. OK, maybe not a "hit," but it found it's way onto many a Walkman after the wrestling team watched "Vision Quest."

To be fair, Tom Cochrane, who was the guy behind Red Rider, also had a large solo hit with Life is a Highway.

thin lizzy had jailbreak, too. Phil Lynot was cool.

Los Lobos have a pretty extensive catalog.

Sinead O'Connor also had teh emperor's new clothes song or something.

But LL didn't have any other songs that could be considered "hits" (at least not on the American charts, as far as I know), and "Nothing Compares 2 U" was O'Connor's only top 40 song here.

Some more:

Nena - 99 Luftballoons
Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music
Martika - Toy Soldiers
T'Pau - Heart and Soul
Breakfast Club - Right on Track
Love and Rockets - So Alive

With repeated references to The Ballad of the Green Beret I feel safe in going back to the 60's for 2 of my all-time favorite one-uit wonders IN THE YEAR 2525 and YUMMY YUMMY.Unfortunately both artists excape me.I do have both those songs in my Time-Life Rockin' 60's collection as well as many of the other songs mentioned.I have the Time -Life collections from the 6060's,70's,80's.Great way to collect one hit wonders.

I would go find these songs and play them but they are in the bedroom with my wife and 3 week old son Jason.I wake them up and my wife will KILL me.

Exile - Kiss You All Over
Maniac - Michael Sembello
Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
At This Moment - Billy Vera and the Beaters
Voices Carry - Til Tuesday
Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor
La Bamba - Los Lobos
Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy
Let's Go All the Way - Sly Fox
Rumors - Timex Social Club
Aldo Nova - Fantasy
Thin Lizzy had quite a few songs that were mildly successful in the US. Aldo Nova went onto write songs for Celine Dion. Sinead O'Conner was big time in the US until the SNL Pope pic incident, not that I could tell you anything else she did but that isn't exactly the kind of music that I listen to. At the same time that Alannah Miles had Black Velvet of the pop/rock charts Robin Lee had it on the country charts.

The rest of them, pretty much yeah.

Did Icehouse have any other songs of note besides Electric Blue?
I have 3 of their CD's, Electric Blue was the biggest, nothing else hit as big as that but they had some more after it. Crazy, No Promises and Don't Believe Anymore were mild hits.

Here are some more,
I Can Dream About You - Dan Hartman (Streets of Fire soundtrack)
Children of the Sun - Billy Thorpe
On the Dark Side - John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Proclaimers

Another song-group occurred to me recently,Seals and Croft -Get Closer(not sure about that title).Equally unsure if S&C qualify as one-hit wondersas the Album Summer Breeze had at least 2-3 hits on it.The album will always mean a lot to me as I lost my virginity to that album.I have it on CD somewhere if my wife hasn't thrown it away. She is a little sensitive to the fact that my FIRST time didn't include her.I deon't know why it bothers her because she was only 9 at the time and we didn't even know each other yet. :D
