Was Big Fish released too late?

It blows every other movie up there to shreds.

Exactly. It got one nomination, for best original score.

So it WASN'T released too late? They just didn't nominate it?

Those mother****ers. I want to go to their mother****ing houses and slit their mother****ing throats.

Big Fish is more than one of the five best movies this year. It's possibly one of the five best movies of all time.

If I see anyone from the Academy, I'm going to fight them.

Easily the best movie I've seen in years.

Ok, let's eliminate a few right away. Seabiscuit was Rudy with a horse. right.

Next, Lost in Translation. From what I understand (I must admit I haven't seen it) it was actually funny.

Moving along we come to Mystic River. This has a pretty good shot, from what I can see, but it seems more likely to wind up a Sean Penn oscar than a whole-movie oscar.

Master and Commander. Very well done, so on and so forth. I really enjoyed it. BUT: the characters are kind of flat; they never really do anything unexpected or show depth (my opinion). I don't see it getting best picture, but it might get some costuming/cinematography awards.

ROTK: huge, epic, oscar-worthy performances from both Andy Serkis AND Sean Astin, and it's the concluding chapter of one of the greatest stories ever written (I believe the Bible leads in sales, but that's it) so no worries about the story being good enough. We have a winner.

Although I agree, Big Fish would give it a run for its money.

Go ahead and let the flames begin, but a movie with dragons and elves should not win best picture, I don't care how good it is.

I don't know what you mean, EM. It's only slightly more seeped in fantasy than "Gangs of New York", "Gladiator" and "Braveheart"...

Just because it may be one of hte greatest stories ever written (although I can't stand fantasy), doesn't mean it should win an oscar.

Look, it was a good movie, but I didn't enjoy it any more than, say, Seabiscuit, or Master/Commander, or Mystic River. Actually, I enjoyed the latter three more than LOTR. I also have a general rule that if I have to take a nap in the middle of a movie, it wouldn't be something I'd like ;)

My vote would got to Seabiscuit or Mystic River.

Big Fish??

;) <-- Winky thing for the frozen brain comment, not for the MR > BF opinion.

I picked The Return of the King. I want a real movie to win the award for once. I'm tired of seeing those artsy-fartsy "films" win the big one. You know, the movies that no one really likes, but they say they do just because it's the thing to do.

Eddie, I guess we're just going to have to admit we have different tastes in movies. Although I stand by my pick. I think Seabiscuit and Mystic River are the only ones in that list that might get it over ROTK.

Whoa, there big guy.

Big Fish was good, but not great IMO.

I've boycotted the Oscars since Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan, but I'm going to watch this time. If ROTK doesn't win, I will kick in my TV screen.

Mainly so I'll have an excuse to buy a 55' Sony widescreen.

Seabiscuit sucked ***, IMO. ROTK should win in a landslide against the other nominees. Then again, so shouild have Saving Private Ryan...

As a general rule, I avoid award shows of all kinds like the plague. There's just too damn many of them for them to mean anything any more.

Go ahead and let the flames begin, but a movie with dragons and elves should not win best picture, I don't care how good it is.Maybe it should win because it finally set Fantasy/Fiction up as a legitimate genre so those actors can be recognized for their on-screen genius (see Sean Astin). As an aside, this should have happened in '79 when Star Wars was up for best picture, but the academy determined that Annie Hall was a better picture .

Or maybe it should win because it showed that CG can be seemlessly interlaced with reality and NOT make a movie corny, over-the-top, or just plain awful to watch.

Or just maybe, it should win because Peter Jackson took the conclusion to the most popular trilogy of all time and introduced it into a medium in which anyone of any age/gender/background can enjoy. I know as a nerd who has read the book that it amazes me what kind of people that now talk about Lord of the Rings (read: cheerleaders, jocks, children, people who don't read, etc.).

The best picture award isn't supposed to go to the movie that portrayed reality the best, or highlighted the most well know actors. It is supposed to go to the best picture of the year, the one that engrossed us and made us actually care about the characters on screen and where the movie was taking us. That is why I agree with Frank Garvin that it is a shame that Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespear in Love. Shakespear in Love was a good movie, no doubt, but the affect that Saving Private Ryan had on the audience was ten times greater. I saw it on opening life and there was hardly a dry eye in the house. We cared about the soldiers in the movie and wanted them to save Ryan and send him home to his mother so that she would have a son left. In that same fashion, we cared about the fellowship and about their mission. We desperately wanted to see Sam and Frodo destroy the ring, defeat Sauron, and save Middle Earth.

So tell me why again Return of the King doesn't deserve to win. Just because of some elves and dragons? Right.

I would like to see Mystic River, but I hate traitors (Tim Robbins and Sean Penn). It truly saddens me that such a good actor can stab the USA right in the back and then millions of dollars still come their way out of the hands of Americans.

Pirates of the Caribbean is as far as I go on the gayOmeter.

OUthunder: Yeah, you're right, the most popular trilogy ever written is prolly just gay and stupid. Also, forgive me if I don't take movie advise from someone who says a movie that stars Keira Knightley in the lead female role is at the far end of his gayOmeter.

Elves should only be in Christmas cartoons & stuff. An elf that stuck a dude through the eye with an arrow. That lands him firmly in "badass" category. Plus, I think this also has to do with the commercialized, cutesy version of elves a-la Keebler that is stuck in everyone's mind.

And as for Johnny Depp's swishy walk in Pirates... ships rock back and forth a lot. Spend a lot of time on them, and you learn to adjust. Then when you finally get back to dry land, you're still trying to adjust, but the land isn't moving, so you wind up wobbling all over the place. So, basically, he walked exactly like any manly pirate would walk.

But we're just running into different tastes in movies. There are some people, and I'm assuming Thunder must be one of them, that don't really get into stories that are that far from reality. Nothing wrong with that, it's just your taste. Personally, I spend enough time in the real world; I kind of like to get away from it in my movies.

I'm also of the viewpoint that the Best Picture award should go, not necessarily to the film with the story I liked the best, but to the one that is best crafted as a whole. In this case, I think the two coincide. The blending of the effects with the live action, the costuming, the story, the music, and the performances by about 18 actors in major roles put together to make a heck of a movie (and director). In my opinion, I don't see another movie on the list that combines that many of the qualities I look for in a Best Picture.

Wow, we've got almost another whole month to argue about this... ;)
