***BIG UPDATE***

"IRVING, Texas -- The Big 12 Conference announced today the continuation of its ABC/ESPN television relationship with an eight-year multimedia and sponsorship agreement.

The new contract will provide broader football exposure for the Big 12 on ABC as well as additional coverage of Big 12 basketball and Olympic sports on ESPN's family of networks. The contract will begin with the 2008-09 academic year and run through 2015-16.

Big 12 football will receive up to 19 telecasts per season on ABC, including the Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship. Football exposure will be enhanced by broader distribution of regional telecasts on ABC as the geographical footprint of affiliates carrying Big 12 games will be expanded. In addition to four guaranteed national telecasts each season, the Conference will have significant prime-time exposure on ABC.........."

Basically ABC/ESPN will pickup what FSN/TBS isn't going to, expand the coverage for regional games, and guarantee more prime time spots and more nationally broadcast games.

It also includes other sports. The second most important college sport, basketball, will get the best TV contract of any conference.

Looks like the Big 12 really got its act together for this one.

Flathead -

The ABC deal is really a continuation of what we had last year. It will not put football on ESPN or ESPN2 .... just ABC (ESPN on ABC stuff). They (ABC) can show up to 19 games including the Big-12 Title game .... last year they showed 18 on ABC. The guarantee 4 national games .... including the Big-12 title games. But, the A&M-Texas game and Colorado-Nebraska games on the friday after Thanksgiving are national broadcasts already so what they are saying is that the Big-12 will get one national telecast prior to Thanksgiving weekend. Fox Sports still has the cable rights to the Big-12 games. This is a status quo contract.

So ESPN will finally televise evening Big XII games on a regular basis? If so, yippee.

Basketball .... this deal is for football, mens and womens basketball and some "olympic" type sports. Fox Sports has the rights to televise non-Saturday football games (outside of the day after Thanksgiving) but the school must agree to play on a non-Saturday (like Thursday) ... it was reported in the press conferecne that the option exists for those type games and has for awhile but none of the 12 school are interested in playing a game on Thursday night due to issues surrounding disruption of classes and such.
