Ok Puter Gurus I need help again

I came out to my Buddies house in western Ok . His Puter is passed ****ed up . slow as hell .
I ran a defrag , tried to run spybot no go . So I uninstalled it , did a reinstall 3 times , It keeps telling me the file is corrupted . So I say F it and go and download the AVG thing. Try to run it and it says UhUh . the file is corrupted .
WTF ?

Ok Im back at his puter . Is a scan disk the same as disk cleanup?
I ran the scandisk and removed a lot of things that he never used . the Machine seems to be somewhat faster now .
I just Redid the spybot thingy , gonna try to run it now .

Nope.

Disk cleanup merely cleans up items on the hard drive.

Scandisk checks the physical state of the disk to see if it can do basic read/write functions. Or, more or less, to see if the drive is still usable.

Now how in hell I do it ?:confused:

Restart in safe mode (hold down F8 while booting up)
Get into command mode (Start -> Run -> cmd)
Type chkdsk /f

Wait till the disk check is over and reboot. See if that helps.
