i just have an email address i basically only use for that kinda thing

you know, then when you need to reset a password, you can get it

of course i can make up my own email addresses anyway, so it doesn't matter :D

actually, i think Symantec may have screwed it up when i sent it

the easy answer is that you can use any email address you want when you configure a POP/IMAP mail client like Outlook Express or Thunderbird

the hard answer is that you can telnet to port 25 on your mail server and issue SMTP commands:

telnet mail.somedomain.tld 25

helo $hostname or $IPaddress (some will just work with "helo")

mail from: [email protected]

rcpt to: [email protected]

data

stuff you want to say
stuff you want to say
stuff you want to say

. (period only on a line ends message)

Actually I sent one quite quickly.

And didn't get a response.

you can send stuff from any address...

So could you, as an IT genius, hack someone's e-mail account so all their outgoing mail says, I don't know, "from: ****[email protected]"?

yermom

maybe.

but that is not what i'm talking about :D

changes to their account would only work if they were using something like webmail that does allow them to change their email address, otherwise their client determines the address they are sending from

now you could go into someone's client and change their outgoing email address to ****[email protected]...

...huh?

Mail servers operate on the honor system. If you know how, and your ISP doesn't clamp down on that sort of thing, it's trivial to forge headers.

It's pretty much the major reason why spam is such a problem.
