NORMAN - The University of Oklahoma honored its scholar athletes
Tuesday morning at the Ninth Annual Max Weitzenhoffer Scholar Athlete
Breakfast. The event was held in the Molly Shi Boren Ballroom in the
Oklahoma Memorial Union.

Women's gymnast Brittney Koncak-Schumann and football player Carl
Pendleton were among the most feted. Both received the Athletics
Director's Leadership Award and the Big 12 Conference Medal. Pendleton
also picked up the Sooner Schooner Award for the highest grade point
average among football letterwinners.

The award winners included ...

Athletics Director's Leadership Award (for demonstration of
extraordinary leadership in representing the university and their team:
Erin Higgins (women's basketball), Brian Carr (men's gymnastics),
Brittney Koncak-Schumann (women's gymnastics), Michael Neal (men's
basketball), Carl Pendleton (football) and Paul Thompson (football).

Big 12 Conference Medal (to senior student-athletes for exemplifying the
best in both of those pursuits): Brittney Koncak-Schumann (women's
gymnastics), Carl Pendleton (football).

Most Inspiring Faculty (as recommended by student-athletes): Dr.
Dipankar Ghosh (accounting), Dr. Kieran Mullen (physics and astronomy),
Dr. Samuel Osisanya (petroleum and geological engineering), Michael
Scott (economics) and Dr. Alan Velie (English).

Dan Gibbens Outstanding Scholar Athletes of the Year (for attaining the
highest level of scholarly and athletic success in the previous calendar
year): Amy Backel (women's track and field), Gabrielle Baker (women's
tennis), Chase Bridgeforth (men's track and field), Jamie Fox
(softball), Sam Hazewinkel (wrestling), Joseph Hughes (baseball), Aaron
Ivey (baseball) and Catherine Odell (women's track and field and cross
country).

Athletics Council Achievement Awards (for overcoming great personal,
academic and/or emotional odds to achieve academic success): Joel
Flaggert (wrestling), Erin Higgins (women's basketball), Michael Neal
(men's basketball) and Kiara Redmond (women's gymnastics).

Athletics Council Service Awards (for important contributions to the
community): Amy Backel (women's track and field), Phillip Bryan (men's
golf), Anne Carter (women's tennis), Jacob Gutierrez (football), Allyson
Kucera (soccer), Jake Messina (men's gymnastics), Anna Monsen
(volleyball), Brandon Moss (baseball), Leah Rush (women's basketball),
Kellen Sampson (men's basketball), Jaclyn Stelzer (women's golf) and
Joshua Weitzel (wrestling).

Jay Myers Award (for freshmen student-athletes that best combine
excellence in scholarship with potential competitive excellence): Chase
Beeler (football), Elliott Blair (baseball), Sam Bradford (football),
Allie Dickinson (women's tennis), Ashley Farrand (soccer), Bridget
Laplante (volleyball), Kate Leyendecker (soccer), Lauren Meador (women's
track and field), DeMarco Murray (football), Andrea Sellmeyer (women's
golf), Ashley Storm (women's track and field and cross country) and
Amanda Thompson (women's basketball).

Sooner Schooner Award (football letterwinner that concluded eligibility
with highest GPA): Carl Pendleton (football).

Athletics Council Academic and Student Life Award for Coaches (for
encouragement of the personal development and academic achievement of
student-athletes): Santiago Restrepo (volleyball)

Champs/Life Skills Team Competition (for the team that earns the most
competition points by attendance at life skills events and numerous
other events): Volleyball.

2006 Academic All-Americans: Kevin Bookout (men's basketball), Tommy
Garrison (men's tennis), Aaron Ivey (baseball), Ryan Rohlinger
(baseball) Britney Koncak-Schumann (women's gymnastics).

Dan Gibbens was my sports law professor in law school. I'm glad they named the award after him a few years ago. He was a great professor and a great person overall.
