My stepmom has recently joined the internet revolution. The only problem is that they have dial-up and every time I call, I can't get through.

I know there is some software that lets you know you have a call and gives you the option to answer.

Does anyone know of a decent free one. I googled, but there are too many and I've never had to use one to know which one is worth a crap.

Those pinheads don't even know I'm going in for surgery because I can't catch them or their answering machine.

It's called "call waiting". Most modems will by default disconnect when they get the incoming call tone. There's an AT code that disables this, and if they already have call waiting, it may be set, and you may need to remove it.

Oh! You could do The Matrix thing, just send them an envelope with a cell phone inside.

they leave it connected all the time?

i can't believe people still pay for dial-up... do they live out in the middle of nowhere?

First, if they are computer newbies, do they even realize that they have probably used up all their time for the month already?
Being new, they wouldn't know how to set up the call waiting program anyway.
Call a neighbor and have them go over to your parent's house to tell your dad to leave the pron alone. And to call you.

yep.

my condolences :)

i like the neighbor idea

i think for the incoming call thing you have to have a modem that supports it, i've never used it though, i haven't used a modem as my connection for a long time
