I've been puting those new light bulbs in the house to help reduce the electirc bill. However the darn things are seven bucks for three compared to a dolla for four of the old fashion. In the long run am I actually saving money?

they seemed to go out alot faster than regular bulbs. it got to be cheaper to just to use the regular bulbs than the ones you're talking about.

I was under the impression that they are suppose to last a lot longer than regular ones. Its not like I'm changing bulbs ever few of months. Just looking for a way to cut down on bills.

The ones I've used have lasted a year or more, so far.

I've got a few of those. They better last about seven years.

I picked up a few at the store on a whim. They were on sale. Pretty nifty, but they won't fit in all my applications because they are taller than a standard bulb.

They also burn a lot cooler than incandescents, which is nice.

100 W = 26 W. You would think you could see even a minimal difference in the electic bill.

The new bulbs use one fourth the electricity of standard bulbs, so if they last at least twice as long they're cost-effective.

The package said they contain mercury and therefore they should not be disposed of in the trash. Great. Someday I'll be covered over in mercury-filled glass twisty things that don't work. Thanks General Electric.

Power cost: 26 W / 100 W < 1/4
Replacement cost: 1 bulb / 2 bulbs = 1/2

TOTAL COST: 1/2 * 1/4 * $7 < $1

oh yeah? But what if the bagger at the store puts a coconut on top of your new more 'spensive bulbs and they break on the way home? What about that Mr Smart With Math Guy?

Take it back to Wal-Mart. They have a very lenient return policy.

They are making new styles that can be on dimmers and three-ways, but you need to make sure the compact flourescents can handle it.

Good question, all flourescent bulbs apparently have mercury in them, but this is the first I have heard of it, used to dispose of thebulbs by breaking them...Glad I knew they may be hazardous waste...

If you want some that look like and are sized like regular incandescents they have some at Ikea for a good price. Mine have lasted longer than regular bulbs, I have a pair in an outside light fixture and they have been in there for 3 years, we were replacing incandescents every 3 months. The CF lights also work well in trouble lights as they are not sensitive to vibration and pop like the old lights.

Okay, you know SOMEONE will try and screw this bulb into two light sockets...

we use several of those lightbulbs in our house--we've been here 3 years and to my knowledge none have burnt out. In contrast, I've changed nearly all of my normal light bulbs...some twice.

I've only had to change two light bulbs in almost ten years, and that was for the same fixture. What in the world are you people doing to your bulbs?

Incandescent bulbs seem to be more sensitive to power surges in my experience.

Our porch light goes through regular bulbs like crazy, but the fluorescent bulbs last a long time.

GottaHavePride

Yeah, we get a LOT of power surges here.

I had one of those swirly fluorescent bulbs start to smoke one night in the utility room fixture. I've stuck with incandescent bulbs since then.

You've never heard of incandescents starting a fire?

Hell, I had one set my bed on fire once.
