I went with 5. When they first started doing the quarters, I said that the Oklahoma quarter better have an outline of the state. In fact, 5 is quite similar to the idea I pictured in my head. The only other thing I would have included is the state motto, "Labor omnia vincit."

soonerboy_odanorth

I went w/ #1. But frankly all of them are kind of disappointing. The state stamp that was done for Oklahoma was better, even though it was based strictly on the musical....

I would have liked a bolder theme. Perhaps the shield from the state flag with a gushing oil well sillouete behind flanked on either side with the wheat grain stalks, and a slightly larger bolder font announcing "Oklahoma!", though that may have been restricted. (Help me out here, Picasso...)

These designs all seem too busy to me, except for the scissortailed flycatcher, which is just too boring.

Other than the scissor tail, they're all the same thing just arranged differently. Came down to #3 & #5 for me so I flipped a coin. :) #5 won.

I do think the text sizes are controlled, all of the state quarters that I have seen seem to have the same size fonts.

I thought they already decided on the bird one. About a month ago we were looking at it in a coin dealers mag.

Personally I'd like to see one with the Schooner on it. The land rush is one of the more well known events of OK.

#2 for me. I like the scissortail, and the other ones seem to "busy" - too crowded with stuff

Ash
4/13/2007, 10:47 PM
Meh. The scissortail was the best in terms of composition, but as others have said it is...well, boring.

The take off on the Madonna of the Prairies is weak IMHO.

Oil gushers and windmills...OK, but those designs were too busy.

Calumet was a nice touch but coupled with the Madonna of the Prairies wannabe, it was weak and not much in terms of composition.

what about a mount rushmore with Switzer, Simms, Stoops and Heupel or something?

I love Oklahoma, but in all honesty Oklahoma is one of the worst damned states at promoting its more unique aspects.

Arkansas got its **** together with promotion and if they can do it then God knows we should.

I went with the scissortail. Simpler is better for coinage methinks.

Also, the fact they removed the Bible from under the pioneer woman's arm kinda bothers me. uber-PCism run amok IMHO. After all, the actual statue upon which the design is based is of a resolute pioneer woman with a Bible under her arm trodding forward into the future with her young son.

Of all the coins that have come out, my favorites have been the ones with the state outlines. (Hence my earlier comment) Many of the state in the early going did this, but recently there haven't been any outlines. The last coin with a picture of a state on it was Minnesota, and it was kind of small and off to the side. The same thing is going to happen on Idaho's quarter. Those two states plus Texas are the only ones west of the Mississippi with the state outline on the quarter, and Texas is the only one of those three where the shape of the state is prominently centered. (It was also the last state coin released to do so.)

Now, Oklahoma's outline is one of the more recognizable outlines of any state in the country. If any state should use and outline, it should be Oklahoma.

while there's no doubt i'm more of a secular guy than many on here, i agree with homey. if that's the way the statue is, put it on there. if it was felt that the bible in hand was going to cause a public issue (enough to omit it, apparently)...then leave off the Pioneer Woman altogether. altering the content of the statue is a milquetoast effort to create something historically inaccurate which is no different from propaganda or mendacious rewrite of the past to suit the present.

as is, throwing a bone to the soft lefties with the PW is exposed for what it is. neither a genuine honor to pioneer women, the statue or artist in question, nor anything but a shrewd attempt to avoid controversy in the most PR friendly of ways (I guess our gov/PR folks don't want us to look like effin' hillbillies when people are buying Dasani waters out of vending machines all around the country).

I love that word "mendacity/mendacious." Spek to you for working it into a sentence.

And yes, I'm not fanatic, but it's worth pointing out that the deliberate revision of the design on which the image is based sans Bible is even more absurd since the very same coin will bear the words, "In God We Trust."

Frankly, I would have preferred the Osage shield design from OUr flag. Or a bust of Will Rogers, who will always remain the quintessential Okie in my heart and mind. Either way, like we've said here before, "busy" designs < simple designs when it comes to coins and flags.

I figured we'd be doing well if we could avoid putting a peace pipe or Will Rogers on the coin. Although the state seal or the shield on the flag would have been okay I guess.

I actually thought it might have been cool to use the Fort Gibson logo...

That's obviously from the police department but why not something with the stockade and the shield?

4/16/2007, 10:21 PM
Looks to me like there's only two choices here: the state bird, and four variations on the pioneer woman. I guess the land run was too 'manifest destiny', the Osage war shield or Sequoyah would have shown favoritism, and 'wind sweeping down the plains of waving wheat' was too hackneyed.

One huge pile of meh.

I voted for #1.

The Pioneer Woman statue is in Ponca City, was commissioned by E.W. Marland in 1926, and unveiled in 1930.

http://www.pioneerwomanmuseum.com/

The statue, dedicated to all pioneer women of the United States, carries the following inscription: “In appreciation of the heroic character of the women who braved the dangers and endured the hardships incident to daily life of the pioneer and homesteader in this country.”

FYI, the statues are "Madonna of the Trail" and are a design approved in 1927 by the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Old Trails Highway Assoc. It was inspired by a statue of Sacajawea in Portland, OR. They are located in the 12 states crossed by US 40.

The "Madonna of the Prairies" was an illustration published in a magazine in late 1909 featuring a mother holding a child in the back of a schooner.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm really into this prairie art stuff. :D

That seems a bit esoteric for me to want to put on a quarter. Being from there I like the idea of having things on there that remind me of home.

That said I'd prefer the shield on there and then either the state outline behind it or the windmill off to the side. Those say Oklahoma to me. Pioneer women don't, and in 23 years of living there I only saw the flycatcher a couple times. Just my $.02

Guess I'll go with #5. meh.

4/18/2007, 09:47 AM
I voted for number two because it didn't have the Prairie Woman. I don't get why it was such a prominent feature in the designs. I definitely would have preferred more Native American imagery.

The oil derrick in number three looks like it's puking.

Tear Down This Wall
4/18/2007, 10:16 AM
Why can't the governmental duckfarts ever get anything right. When people think of Oklahoma, they think of Native Americans and oil. Okay, fine. So, why not a design of a Native American on horseback?

I can understand with the oil bust and all maybe not putting a derrick prominently. But, oil did shape the state throughout the 20th cenutry. So, why not a coin with an oil well?

There reason I voted for the scissortail flycatcher is that it is at least unique.

The prairie woman...this has already been discussed. The dimwits who designed the options took the Bible out of her arm. Give me an break. If they think the woman holding a Bible would be too controversial, just don't have the woman.

Stupid idiots.

Also, As far as state quarters go, the ones that don't try to jam too much crap on them are better than the ones who try to cram all sorts of useless crap on there:

Yeah, I sort of agree. But, I guess the piont is, they stuck with one theme. Now, if they'd jammed all those instruments over "Rocky Top" in the background, that, to me, would have been overkill.

Just pick one theme and go with it. Even though I think Vermont is just a sh*teating version of Cuba, I like their quarter the best - an old fart out in the woods tapping trees for their sap. That is Vermont.

Oklahoma is Native Americans or Oil. Choose one and go with it. Quit jamming prairie women on there.
