are you formatting the main drive, or a secondary one?

Are you going to replace the OS? Normally, the OS installer has a format option.

there is a format option. just for the life of me can't recall how to get there. I have reformatted our other dell but I just can't recall how to get to the option. when you reboot its like f12 but from there I am lost.

likely, you just need to boot off of the CD

i never use the Dell CDs though, so i'm not all that sure

If you really wanna help out your kid do what I did. I "reformatted" their computer by throwing it in the trash ditch out back and disconnected our ****ty dial-up internet service.

They bitched for all of about 2 days, then they were over it. Hell man, if my kids wanna surf pron, or hook up with some gay molester they can do it like all the other kids do. At school.

Depending on when you bought it, Dell has a boot option to recover your drive. You can tell if you have it by rebooting and hitting ctrl-F11 repeatedly (just once if you hit it at the right spot).
