Thankfully, my kid is a rising senior and thus almost out college. She learned today that she was elected chair of the committee that runs rush next fall and decides who gets a bid to her sorority. She is very happy and excited.

Not having been in one of these Greek orgs in college because they were'nt allowed at my school, I have no idea if this is good or mostly a pain in the arse.

I welcome your opinions if you be an ex-Greek type person.

It was my experience that the whole process was a giant pain in the ***, but also the most important thing you did all year. Granted I was at a much smaller school, but the whole rush process was giant cluster, that I can only imagine is multiplied by having a bunch of women involved.

Sorority girls are hard on one another. One of my friends who was in a sorority at 'Bama helps me do panel job interviews. She always tells the stories about rushing and deciding if "we want to brush our teeth with her for a few years or not." Meh. I got nothin'.

Let's keep it on topic.

Basically, if what I've heard about sorority rush is true, she's about to start a journey though hell. Half of her sisters will love her, an half will hate her over one single person they decide to let in. Also, she probably won't get much of a summer. I hear women have completely illogical logic when deciding who to give a bid to. For example, I heard one semester Toby Keith's daughter didn't get into the house she wanted because the girls in the house thought they would become jealous of her status and father.

Most important thing? How so? Important for the fraternity or sorority getting "desirable" candidates or more important than other college activities like studying and getting decent grades?

I really couldn't come up with any reason more supportive of my contention that social fraternities and sororities are a big waste of time than the above post.

Without new membership, the organization dies. It is the most important event to the Greek organization, not the individuals within the house.

From an organization standpoint, especially one with constant turnover, you have get who you let in right. It's no different from a business, sports, team, or Elks club. I realize you have a problem with people forming voluntary associations at college for networking and social purposes, but you have recognize the organizational utility of getting people who fit in with the group into the group.

[sorority girl voice] Oh. Mah. Gawd. Being rush chair is, like, so important! If we don't get like, some more awesome girls in here next year our house will like, die. [/sorority girl voice].

Homey, my wife was rush chair her senior year and it made for a stressful summer, especially August. Once it was all over, however, it was all good. I'm sure your daughter will do a great job, recruit outstanding pledges, and ensure the future success of her house. Go Homey's daughter!

Once when I was still in school, my friend and I were sitting in Cate Center. Isn't that the little restaurant/ convienience store that is down in the middle of the dorms? We noticed a flyer on the wall that was advertising some charity function that one of the sororities was having. So we started joking that they were only having the event so they would have an excuse to get another T-shirt made about it. We falied to notice this girl at the table next to us who was proudly sporting her 1998-spring-homeless-date-dash-formal-casino-night T-shirt or whatever it was. She just starts letting us have it about how thier organizations do so much good and help so many people. It was pretty funny.

Heh. My daughter's chapter has a rather unique charity fiundraiser. They run a sporting clays (you'll notice I avoided any reference to "skeet") tournament to benefit something or other.

I think its kinda cool, I told her they should do a t-shirt up about "blondes, guns, and money."

Anyway, their official cause is "deafness" and support of programs to accomodate the hearing impaired.

Supporting the hearing impaired by shooting guns... which can lead to hearing loss if improperly protected. I love it. :D

I was in a fraternity while I was at OU. The girl that became my wife was in a sorority there too. Our oldest son pledged my fraternity back in 2003.

My findings are generally that it is easier to get into a fraternity but with a much harder (in the 70's it was brutal) pledgeship. It was harder to get into your sorority of choice without being a legacy but with an easier pledgeship.

There are exceptions to both tenets of course. I saw guys and girls that really stepped up to be leaders as well as watching some fall into bottomless bottles of alcohol.

For me the friends I made in the house are the most invaluable component to frat life. I engage to this day with several brothers for professional services (brokerage, accounting, investing). My son is finding that these relationships will also pay off for him.

The wife has a couple of sisters that she stays in touch with periodically.

All in all, I find it better to have been in one for the after college connections than to not join at all. Just my opinion.
