Yup. Don't renew your driver's license on the same day - they'll think it's counterfeit.

Didn't the deadline just come up for needing a passport to go to Canada? That's going to create a huge delay.

not really, see there's this little trick.

You only need a passport when travelling to Canada by air. I can drive there anytime I want just using my Drivers License.

And since there's casinos in Detroit now why would you need to drive there anyhow?

Casino age in Canada is 19, not 21.

For me? It's the cleaner whores ;)

For most people...especially those between the ages of 19 and 21? the legality of drinking booze ;)

I've got to get a new one pretty soon. If you live in/near Houston it's faster but far more troublesome just to go down and get it in person.

I lost my old passport several years ago, but never reported it lost. Aren't you suppose to do that?

Oh. I was thinking of all the border cities. Tijuana, Matamoros, Juarez...festering ****holes. If there was a city like that in the US you wouldn't want to get within 50 miles, but put it on the other side of the border and it becomes a tourist destination. I don't get it.

A six-hour drive vs. a six-week wait... :texan:

With your luck, this is certainly going to bite you in the *** somehow.

I'm heading to the Mayan Riviera, right outside of Cancun, on Thursday. Just thought you all would like to know.

Fixed.

Really...10-12 weeks.

Another trick is to call your congressman/woman if you are getting near you trip and don't have your passport back yet.

I had to give Mary Fallin's office my credit card number last month, but I got my passport in 2 days, and just a few days before my trip.

phew...that was close.

What if you are travelling by boat?

And does the passport for flying only rule apply to Mexico as well? Because I heard about this a couple of days ago, and I was wondering if people taking cruises stopping in Mexico will now need a passport.

so far as I know it only applies to Canada. I think a great deal of that has to do with the fact that along the border cities (Detroit, Seattle, Buffalo, etc) there are a lot of Canadians whom work in the United States while living on the Canadian side of the border. (ie...avoid having 40% taken out of paychecks to pay federal taxes, plus being paid at a higher rate of pay) Those same cities on the Canadian side of the border (Vancouver, Windsor, Toronto) tend to get a decent rate of tourism from the American side of the border, so the passport issue would cause problems there.

Regardless, I think it will be mandatory for even driving by late 2008 to go to Canada.

Isn't that going to be changing soon?

(actually, the way I understand it is that you'll have to have a passport to get back into the States, irrespective of needing one to enter Canada.)

Before, a picture identification and a birth certificate were sufficient documentation to cross the border from Canada, but by 2008, a passport will be required.

not until next year.

Didn't the deadline just come up for needing a passport to go to Canada? That's going to create a huge delay.I just renewed mine a month or two ago and it didn't take very long. My only problem was a retarded lady at the post office who was convinced i had the wrong form filled out... because mine was the NEWER version than the one she had. oh, and she was also convinced I needed my birth certificate even though it was a passport renewal. illiterate yainch

Same here. I wouldn't have expedited if it was for a personal trip though.
