View Full Version : ARTHUR BROWN

Encouraging quote from recent Arthur Brown interview with Scouts.

“My plan is to narrow down the field to, hopefully, five, after my visits this summer," Brown said. "Then, from there take officials to those five and pick from there. Distance isn’t a big deal to me so I’m looking everywhere.

“I do really like Oklahoma,” he admitted. “I will say they’ll definitely be on my favorites list, in my top five for sure. It’s about two hours from my house, so I know it pretty well already. OU is one of the great programs and has such a great tradition. Coach (Brent) Venables and I talk a lot. He is a great coach and has a great vision for the team. We are really on the same page. I know exactly where he’s coming from.”

I read somewhere that Brown is looking for a team that has a lot of talent coming in with him. With the recruiting class so far, I think that may help us land him. I will go out on a limb and say that we get Arthur and by February of 2009, we will also have little bro - the better of the two bros - Bryce. Brown family will probably shy those boys away from USUCK due to them being in a "thugville" type neighborhood. Only other big competition to my knowledge was FSU, but that ship has sailed with Bowden already taking 3 4 star or better LB's for this year's class.

I watched part of the game, and he looked like he was playing in fast forward with the rest of the players in slow motion. He's a missile but he overruns plays a lot. But he's so fast at the HS level that it really doesn't matter as he's around the ball no matter where it goes. Dodge City ran some HS-level counter plays, which had varying degrees of success. He blows up blockers and gets to the ball carrier with ease. He'll need some fine-tuning at the college level, but he's a beast.

One one play, the fullback for DC ran straight at him (right side) while the RB ran a counter to the left. Brown blew up the FB and even though the RB had already passed the line of scrimmage on the other side, Brown was still in on the tackle which resulted in a 2- or 3-yard gain.

On another play, the DC QB ran a play fake and rolled to the right. Brown bit on the fake and went straight for the RB, crushed him, realized he didn't have the ball, and then rocketed toward the QB, causing the QB to get rid of the ball by throwing it out-of-bounds.

Rivals confirmed it. No Arthur for OU.

This sounds, quite honestly, like a prima donna who just got booted from the play-offs and wants to make a scene.

I haven't liked the way the whole "show" has gone with Brown, anyway. 20 schools on his "list." Shaving it down 3 teams at a time. Dragging it out. Making a show. The "tour the nation" recruiting trip with his own bus. It's like he stole a page out of the Recruiting "How to set yourself up to fall as hard as possible" Manual:

Chapter 1: The Obnoxious Use of Limousines, the Jimmy Claussen Story.

Chapter 2: The "Feed-your-ego" 20 school recruiting Bus Tour: the Arthur Brown story.

It doesn't bode well, if you ask me. But I suppose I wish him well, nonetheless. The truth is that if he really didn't feel at home, then he wouldn't have been.

There are certain folks who are drawn to hard work and tough love. They are the sorts that join the marines, the army rangers, the navy seals. They are the sorts that are drawn to Venables and Schmidty. The Peterson's, the Loftons, the Claytons, ghd Harrises . . . and so forth.

And then there are those who are drawn to politics, or the path of least resistance. The listen to slick and easy-talking voices of Pete Carroll & Boo Blake. They wind up at North Carolina, or Miami, or wherever. If they're lucky, they eat their humble pie early and land at Sam Houston State for a couple of years before they go on to better things. If they are unlucky, they learn their lessons in a much harder way . . . from dog-catchers, PETA, and Federal Judges. They are the Vicks, the PacMan's, the Mosses, and so forth.

I hope that Brown does not land among them. But it doesn't smell right to me right now.

It'll be interesting to see how the rest of his recruiting plays out. If he continues to ratchet up the noise, the shock, the awe, then I say we're better off without him.

But if he can scale it back and make a humble, well-thought decision without stirring up so much attention for himself . . . then I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong and that we lost a truly good recruit.

Moving on . . . I wonder what this means for Major's decision. Will he reconsider?

I agree, we do not know if he will live up to the ranking or not. I really wanted him to come here, but maybe with all of our depth he was scared or maybe like someone else said he might not have felt comfortable here. He might be a bust or a stud.

He must have disliked how Stoops handled the last prima donna that came to OU. I believe that he is now playing at Sam Houston State or some place like that if memory serve me correctly.

So Brown announces today. Any ideas on who he picks? My gut keeps saying its going to be LSU with Mr. HAVE A GREAT DAY. Thoughts? Hope he enjoys watching us win National titles the next few years.

Miami? Really?

That would have been my last guess. I wonder if Bryce will have the sack to come play for us when he could be looking across the ball at big brother in one of his first couple of games?

I doubt it. But it would be a nice story line.

2007-2008 = the year of the asterisk.

The Crystall Ball has been treated like a hot potato: everyone batting it to the the next contender.

If LSU beats OSU, it'll have very little to brag about.

And let's be honest: LSU had better win this year because there's no way Lester's luck holds up beyond this year. He's going to get his arse handed to him with those fourth down "let 'er rip" calls he keeps making. That sucker had to have made a deal with the devil.

So your 2006 Big XII Championship is invalid?

Against my better judgment, I'm going to humor it:

Here's the deal. We were talking about qualifications (asterisks) not verfication (validity). It's a distinction that you will not be able to comprehend until you actually have at least two championships that can be compared to one another. Preferably more - say, for example, five in the last 8 years. At that point in time a fan of a championship program (such as OU, LSU, USC, even Texas) has the luxury of admiring each championship and comparing the merit of one trophy winning season against another. It's true. It really happens like that up here.

But it's not something I expect you to grasp. You live in a world where the thought of even winning a championship is so far fetched that it would need to be approached with words like verification, proof, and validity: "Could this possibly be for real?" "Surely I must be dreaming."

Forgive me while I pinch you back into the sad reality of your pathetic excuse for a football program.

Now, scurry along. You don't belong in this conversation.

.................

For the record, Deek, Aggie did bring up an interesting point. I think I can honestly say that, as I do sit here and survey the landscape of our conference crowns, that this one doesn't feel as good as last year's, or others that we've won. It still feels damn good, though. Don't get me wrong. But maybe not AS good.

And I can honestly say that even if we were to win the NC, it would still feel a little "icky" having been stung by Colorado and Tech. There's something so pure about the way we won in 2000 - unexpected and undefeated.

Just scattershooting, I suppose.

I hope LSU barely beats tOSU AFTER we lay the lumber on WV. This way, the AP can give us the same kind of champeenship they gave suc in 2003. Something has to counteract the SEC voting as a unit and the Bowdens ****ing with where we should have been in the coaches' poll.

Anyone notice that with the verbal of Brown to Miami they now have verbals from the 2, 3, 4, and 15th highest rated outside linebackers according to Rivals? What's the dealio with that? Do they not know Miami pretty much sucks now? ...or maybe they want to play for someone that sucks?

Desert Sapper

It could be that the legacy of NFL linebackers is working in Miami's favor. A kid turns on his TV set and he can see Ray Lewis, Dan Morgan, Jonathan Vilma, and DJ Williams. Plus, it can't hurt that most of these kids remember that Miami had one of the nation's longest winning streaks before tOSU beat them in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. It's what they grew up with.

Randy Shannon has also excited some people, and his defensive background has got to work in their favor when it comes to top prospects.

But in Arthur's case, it may just be that Randy enjoys being black, too. :D

Ok not to try to belittle Brown, but I'd like to compare some numbers here, and get any input thats out there. Brown, according to scouts Bench Presses 315, Squats 315, power cleans 235, has a 30 in vertical jump and ran a 4.47 froty at an Oklahoma Camp. Traivs Lewis's numbers acfcording to scout: BP:350, SQ: 550, PC's 320, Vertical 38 inches, and runs a 4.45 forty, and rivals show him at 4.34. Granted Brown is a 5 lbs heavier, according to scouts, but the OU roster now lists Lewis at 233.

My reason for listing these numbers is to asK this: just how good is Lewis and what kind of potential does he have......To think of a 235 lb LB that can run like the wind and jump like a BB player, and has his strength is gonna be a very hard guy to discount for any offense we face in the furture.......

Rivals had Lewis as a 3 star for a good part of the year last year, if my memory serves correctly. I definitely was wondering what was up with him given those numbers. Maybe he lacks the instincts?

Brown clearly has a nose for the ball. It'll be interesting to see how Lewis develops. If nothing else, he should make for a heckuva special teams gunner!

I'm eager to hear more of the reports about the young players and how they did during the extra workouts. I saw one on rivals about the DE's (praised Frank Alexander). I'd love to hear who else stood out.
