You remember him....the NE receiver that was paralyzed after a hit by the Raiders' Jack Tatum.
Ex-Patriots WR Stingley dies at 55

CHICAGO -- Former New England Patriots (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nwe) receiver Darryl Stingley has died. He was 55.

Stingley was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital Thursday morning after he was found unresponsive in his home, according to Tony Brucci, an investigator with the Cook County medical examiner's office.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

Stingley played football until Aug. 12, 1978, when the then 26-year-old receiver went up for a pass during a preseason game and was hit hard from behind by Oakland Raiders (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=oak) safety Jack Tatum. The hit left Stingley paralyzed.

Stingley was born and raised in Chicago. He attended Purdue on a football scholarship.

In 1973, he was a first-round draft pick of the Patriots, who are now owned by Robert Kraft.

"On behalf of the Kraft family and the entire Patriots organization, we're deeply saddened by news of Darryl Stingley's death, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Stingley family at this time," team spokesman Stacey James said.

I remember that game, and watching it. really sad. it seemed so improbable at the time. i've mentioned before, one of my good buddies is a quadriplegic from a car accident, it ain't easy. it takes a lot of real courage everyday for someone in that position. just to want to get up in the morning.

go get em Darryl.

I haven't decided, but Doc is closing the gap.

Not that gap, it's never closed.

I used to have a picture of Stingley on my wall. Cut it out of a magazine, he was in full stride reaching back with one arm to catch a pass. Man that dude was built.

Sad story.

I used to love the Patriots as a little one. Steve Grogan and Stanley Morgan baby.
