today is the last day for my crappy kitchen as we know it.......the contractor will be here in an hour to start the teardown

new cabinets, new countertops, new sink, new range, new tile backsplash

woot!!!!

we've got **** all over the damn house, looks like a war zone, i'll be glad when they're done!

i'll have to scan in the before pics we took, and will get some after for sure

we used the website "service magic", they match up contractors for whatever job you're looking for.......anyway, found a company "classic kitchens"...they do ALL the work, no subs...they'll be done in 10 days....whats amazing is that he said they'd have the old boxes out in 2 hours

i've been really impressed with the way this contractor handles his business

you know, this whole project started because of a stupid crappy 23 year old 28 inch cooktop....it sucks, and since they dont make 28 inch models anymore....

well, that was the first domino that fell.....we're still waiting to figure out whether the floor has to be redone.....they're taking a peninsula off the countertops to open up the kitchen more.....and we only have 4 tiles of the floor that the previous owners put in......they're going to try and pop up 4 more tiles from under the fridge.......if they cant, then we have to put in a new floor

sanantoniosooner
4/3/2007, 08:15 AM
New floor is likely. But you might get lucky.

If the previous owners installed with cheap thinset you have a chance. Of course, then you might worry about the rest of it :)

everybody has their own level of comfort as far as remodeling goes.

I know how to roof, done it for 3 summers....but I sure as hell don't want to do mine when it comes time to do it. It's worth the money to me to not have to do it and and have it done in a day.

sanantoniosooner
4/3/2007, 12:08 PM
I have a rule about certain kinds of work.

It doesn't matter if I CAN do it. If I can get paid equally to do something I'd rather do and pay someone to do something I don't care to do, it all evens out.

I can do lots of things I'd rather pay someone else to do.

But I usually reserve that for crap jobs like roofing or the like.

Make sure you get a written estimate from any plumbers before they start. ;)

jk the sooner fan
4/3/2007, 01:32 PM
they're doing ALL THE WORK

nothing is being subbed out

electric (ripping out an old cooktop and wall oven/microwave combo), rewiring and resetting the outlets and replacing them with the GFI - in compliance with the code

plumbing - installing a new undermount sink, a new faucet, new disposal, taking out the sink in the wet bar and capping off the plumbing....moving the dishwasher

taking off the formica backsplash, formica countertops, replacing with a solid surface and tile backsplash

and new cabinets

OU4LIFE
4/3/2007, 01:48 PM
esspensive.

but it'll be nice.

jk the sooner fan
4/3/2007, 01:51 PM
yeah, cheaper than alot of the other contractors who wanted to sub everything out

but the kitchen is as old as the house, and if i ever moved, i'd have a hard time selling it without the upgrade....plus it will finally be a functional kitchen for us, which it really hasnt been

but the work thats being done - stratospheres above my capability level

Just one question. What do they intend to do with the old boxes where plugs used to be? Cover them up with backsplash?

I ask because if they were strictly adhering to code, they would have to put blank plates over all of those so they would be accessible if there was ever a problem. To be honest, if properly done, it's one case where I don't think it's a big deal to ignore code, but I thought you might want to know.

jk the sooner fan

Like I said, there are times when you do ignore that code. But if you do, you better take extra precaution to make sure the likelihood of ever having a short in that box is minimal. I usually strip wires a lot, twist them with pliers, a lot, cut off the excess wire and put a wire nut on with the pliers to get them extra tight.

make sure the guys don't just hold a bunch of wires together, without twisting them with pliers, and let just the wire nut hold them together.

I wouldn't worry about it then.

Just be aware it's fudging on code a little. It wouldn't pass if you were being inspected. Assuming they cover it with backsplash that is. I'm sure they will.

I've dealt with those a lot. Unfortunately yours is kind of small. If it was larger, you could just open it up, add some can lights and run a little crown molding around it. Maybe a fan if that's your thing.

But that one is so small it limits options a bit.

You could cover over it and go with can lights all over.
You could re-trim it out with oak that matches the cabinets.
That's all that came to mind quickly.

thats sort of what mrs jk was thinking!

at first we were going to go with the microwave/hood combo.....but it would have been really low over the top of the range.....and we wanted to do something with a little contrast in that spot to draw out the rest of the backsplash.......we're getting more counterspace than we had before, so we'll get a smaller microwave than we currently have and set it on the countertop

we put in a pour-in, undermount just like it. had a terrible time. finally made the countertop guys tear it out and put in an undermount stainless. when they were tearing out the sink, they busted the quartz and and to replace the whole countertop.

the easiest (and least costly) is to replace the dark wood around it with wood to match your new cabinets, and get different covers.
I painted the wood white and I'm looking for stainless covers.
