Switzer and Toby Keith. I bet Switzer wears the pants in that relationship. Kinda like Rocky and Anthony on Survivor.

i played Little League baseball with and against Greg Switzer....and Barry (who was frigging God in Norman at the time) came to the games at Rotary Park and sat in the bleachers just like any one else.

I wondered that myself. I remember going to Othello's years ago when "The King" had his own private booth.

I thought the enema tale was hilarious (heh. enema. tale.) It shows how down-to-earth and self-deprecating The King is. He doesn't take himself too seriously, and he really isn't concerned what people who aren't his friends and family think of him.

Patsy's. I've seen him there numerous times. When Patsy left Othello's, Barry left with him.

Does Switzer turn down opportunities to be in the broadcast booth? I would think he would be in high demand.

Nice to see a writer appreciate Barry for who and what he is rather than deride him for who and what he isn't.

Coaches like Barry, Jackie Sherrill, and other colorful characters are great. Spurrier is sorta like that, just who he is. I live in his hometown (Johnson City, Tennessee) well, right next to it anyhow. He is a very polarizing figure here. I think mostly because he didn't play or coach at UT and always beat the VOLS.

Back in my days in Norman in the '90s if you went out and ran into The King it made it a great weekend. Not as great maybe as getting laid, but a different kind of great. Saw him randomly at Othello's and Opie's. The fact that he enjoyed a dive bar like Opie's is evidence of his genuine down-to-earth nature.

Not sure about this though:
...This is the way it should be for Switzer, an unfailingly upbeat, non-judgmental man with a stunningly small ego.... :D 3 out of 4 ain't bad. It is the way it should be, he is upbeat and non-judgmental. ;)

To Dean or others--I've been away from Norman for 9 years--what's the story here? Othello's is still there? Where is this Patsy's?

And great article on a Legend.

I wonder how many youngsters and media idiots even know that Switzer was the man who installed and tought the wishbone while an OU assistant? That alone should tell you just how good of a coach he was.

I met Coach Switzer before the 1980 OU-Stanford game and I saw him again afterwards in the men's room following a very difficult press conference (OU lost 31 to 14) when I told him do his best to salvage the season. He replied "We'll win a few games." The Sooners went 10 and 2.

Barry is indeed The King.

I don't care what anyone says, but Switzer IS COLLEGE FOOTBALL. You have John McKay, Bear Bryant, Tom Osborne, DKR, Joe Paterno and some others but none stand out like Barry Switzer. Controversies, well many successful programs have had them as well as major accomplishments. SWITZER is a great people-person and is a GOD. He is COLLEGE FOOTBALL and will forever be so.

At the "Legends of Sports" dinner last year the Creek Nation tribe presented The King with an indian blanket, he stepped up to the mic and said "Thanks, but how about you give me one of those casinos instead?" :D

Man, that guy has some crazy stories too! He had me laughing all night

It was nice to see the personal touch by the author. It wasn't merely an article about facts but his impressions of the legend.

He likes Switzer and is not apologizing to anyone for doing so. Well done.
