Now, I'm not saying I did this but let's say hypothetically I spent 5 hours downloading a movie only to have it finish and discover that someone thought it'd be funny to rename some old English movie from the 50s as the movie that I hypothetically would have downloaded.

Ugh!

Just a guess: the movie you WANTED to download was a remake of the one you got.

Nope not a remake.

Well, this is a hypothetical situation. In the real world of course I would have.

The great irony is that if hypothetically this scenario were true then I'd hypothetically have to run to Wal-Mart in a little while.

You know who thinks this kind of thing is funny, and does it a lot?

The RIAA and MPAA. Why? Because when you download them, they have an opportunity to track it back to the downloader.

You know what else they think is funny? Suing students who download these things.

Enjoy.

When I worked at Sound Warehouse we had a Beta rental copy of The Last American Virgin returned, they said after about 30 minutes Dumbo had been recorded over it.

Aye, this is also a pet peeve of mine. I also really hate dishonest people who purposely put up a false front/personality just to mess with and manipulate people for his or her personal enjoyment. There's a special place in hell for those people.

That is a slightly different syndrome than pure dishonesty to self but equally as disgusting....

You do realize that there was a 1950s release of Casino Royale, right?

And yeah, complaining about the quality of something you illegally downloaded is pretty damn pathetic.

Close, Casino Royale (1967) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061452/) is a spoof on the Bond series.

From the link above.

Sir James Bond, a spy from the old school (a good spy is a pure spy) is called back to service by the death of "M" and the imminent collapse of civilization. The opposition tries to compromise him, but even as nubile young agents are thrown at him, he remains above it all. Going beyond parody to sillyness, every agent is renamed James Bond, 007 to confuse the enemy, including Woody Allen who plays, Little Jimmy Bond.

I'm assuming that SicEm was attempting to illegally download "Casino Royale." Which is a film that has had two different theatrical releases. One from the 60s, which is reportedly awful, and one from last year.

If you'd stick to reputable torrent sites, this wouldn't happen.

i tried downloading one of the Harry Potter movies from Limewire (no .nfo file) years ago, it was either the first or second

i got Ghost Dog or something instead

as unreliable and slow as P2P downloads are, i was not pleased :D

I remember seeing the 1967 film on TV as a kid, and thought it was funny. Not sure if I'd feel the same way about it now.

why the hell would you spend 5 hours downloading a movie illegally when it only costs $15?

yermom
3/29/2007, 12:27 AM
it's not like you are actively doing something for 5 hours, you start it and come back later

5 hours isn't really that long, i've had stuff take like a week on Limewire with sources disappearing for a while, etc..

torrents are another matter though

proud gonzo
3/29/2007, 12:30 AM
i understand that--i still think it's retarded. to me, if it takes longer to download than it takes to actually watch, it isn't worth it.

yermom
3/29/2007, 12:32 AM
what about Netflix?

seriously though, i almost never download movies, it's not worth all the hassle to get crappy quality files that i can't play on my DVD player

SoonerBBall
3/29/2007, 12:47 AM
First off, you guys are bush league if you don't have a respectable place to download media.

Second, regardless of what anyone else tells you, you are perfectly able to download any media you want to your hearts content and nobody will do a damn thing to you. However, if you upload even a little bit of that file and the **AA happens to have someone monitoring the upload, you are toast. That is why unencrypted BitTorrent users are getting hammered. Simple tip, use Limewire or some other file sharing program that allows you to turn off uploading. Simple tip #2, uploading while you download is the main force behind BitTorrent, so you will not find a BT client that allows you to turn off uploading and still download.

Third, I've never participated in file sharing a day in my life and I have no idea what any of you are talking about...

it takes at least a day to get Netflix movies, that's a lot longer than it takes to watch a movie ;)

proud gonzo
3/29/2007, 12:58 AM
yeah, but to me the only purpose of downloading something vs. going out and getting a hard copy is that you want it immediately. if it's going to take 5 hours to download, that pretty much negates the immediacy of it. if i'm in a hurry to get a movie, i don't get it from netflix. I go to blockbuster or walmart or borders.

yermom
3/29/2007, 01:02 AM
well, lots of times these are flicks that aren't on DVD yet

or in theaters in some cases...

A couple of years ago one of my buddies downloaded a movie that was still in theaters. I don't remember what it was, but after like a week of babying his computer he went to watch it and it was some dude holding a camcorder, recording it off the screen at a movie theater. You couldn't see **** and all you could hear was people coughing. I laughed my *** off.

The only movie I've ever downloaded was "Fahrenheit 911", because Michael Moore said it was ok by him and I didn't want to give him any money.

The quality sucked, but that just matched the movie's content. ;)

why the hell would you spend 5 hours downloading a movie illegally when it only costs $15?

probably because his stringer-along-momma told him to download it so that he didn't spend any of the money he doesn't have for her to take from him just by asking because he is such...her....bitch. :D

It's cause of the Metric System I heard.
