Tonto and the Lone Ranger were out riding. The Lone Ranger dismounted from Silver to take a whiz. He comes running back from the Bushes. Tonto says what's the matter Kimmosabe. The Lone Ranger says I got bit on my d*** by a rattle snake, ride to town ask the doctor what we should do.
Tonto rides to town. The doctor says you must suck out the venom. Tonto rides back to the Lone Ranger.
What did the doctor say Tonto? asked the Lone Ranger.
Tonto replied he say you going to die kimmosabe.

Attn: Dog Owners/Lovers (not THAT waY!)

For a modest fee you can have any dog "snakeproofed". Contact hunting clubs, Bird dog groups, etc.
The training is humane, effective, and inexpensive.
I've known a number of good bird dogs that would have lived and hunted for many more years had they been "enrolled" in such programs, but any dog which is allowed outside, even in a confined space, may encounter a venomous reptile that has entered the area.

Get 'er done!

Are you sure about that? If a man gets bit by a copperhead, he'll be fine? I had no idea and have never heard that before.

Copperhead's venom has hemotoxins...basically, the venom turns your blood into jelly...that's why the swelling happens.

FYI...

"Copperhead bites are typically not fatal," says Dr. Peter Bromley, N. C. Cooperative Extension Specialist in Zoology. Small animals, like small dogs, may receive a fatal bite from a copperhead. The venom causes local tissue destruction and secondary infection often sets in. If you or your pet are bitten by any snake that you suspect is venomous, get medial attention immediately. For the most part, if you let snakes alone, they'll leave you alone.

Well, from one ol' vet to another...You are WRONG; Flat damned wrong.
Properly taught, with occasional refreshers, the training IS highly effective and has saved many a good dog, even a few bad ones.

This is too serious a matter for you or anyone else to misinform dog owners who care enough to take a worthwhile measure to protect their dogs.

Out.

1. Nobody has ever died from a copperhead bite. Nobody.

2. My dogs have been bitten a couple of times. Like Vet's dog, they swell all up and act sick for a couple days and then they're good to go.

3. After being bit, they pretty much bark at the snakes from a distance now. Being bit is pretty much "snakeproofing" your dogs. My dogs have all been skunked too. Once. Now they bark at them and chase them, but always pull up about 20 or so feet away from them.

You're kidding, right? Your kids dying from a snake bite is a serious matter. Your dog, not so much.

Catching a porcupine doesn't always result in a dog that stays away from them.

And, Dean.........losing a dog to a bite would be fairly serious depending on the investment of time and money into that dog.

Fortunately, my dad never paid the big bucks for a dog, but a lot of guys do. And the training is a lot of time invested. This is just purely an investment perspective without considering that you might actually like the dog and hate to see it die.

Well in Dean's world, if a dog/kid/person is too stupid to stay away from a skunk's *** or a snakes mouth then it/he/she deserves to get bit.

If I ever get bit again by a snake it's damn sure gonna be my fault.

GoshOhGeeBobcats, Dean. Is there no way you can understand that there are people, many in fact, who realize that protecting their pets, while certainly not on a plane with caring for their kids, is a matter of compassionate responsibility?
I never advocated abdication of OTHER duties in favor of a dog, cat, or pet amoeba.
For a very small price one can better assure that his kids will not be treated to the horrifying sight of ol' Muttleigh as he gasps his last...all 'cuz Dad didn't wanna dip into his beer fund. If yew'd see one die that way, just once, you'd do anything to prevent a recurrence.
Whether the dog is a valued asset in the monetary sense, a beloved companion (perhaps the kids' guardian as well), or all of the above he/she deserves the best we can do to protect him/her, especially in a high-risk area.
That's it...let conscience and common sense be the guide.
