I'm currently on a kelly rig and they can only drill a 30 foot drill pipe down at a time. On top drive rigs they can drill a stand or three connected 30 foot drill pipes down at a time.

The complaining was going to be about having to get up and out of my recliner more often on a kelly rig as they make a connection every 30 feet instead of every 90 feet and when they are drilling at 100- 130 feet per hour that's a lot of getting up.

I then remembered that I get to sit in my recliner and watch TV the 99% of time I'm working. I decided not to complain.

1.5X RL piping seems kinda goofy, but then I haven't inspected drill pipe or casing in a 4 yearsish

don't know what they use offshore but every kelly rig I've been on drills em down 1 joint at a time and every top drive I've been on drills a stand (3 joints) at a time.
