7's went 4-0 against 10's this year, while 11's pulled two upsets.

5 v. 12 is where I always look for an upset.

Actually, it has more to do with the teams than the seeds. I know, I'm a genious.

That's not a bad place to look, but it's no 7 v. 10.

yeah, but 7 v. 10 isn't much of a cinderella story.

5 v. 12 is reasonably common(usually at least once a March) and almost totally unexpected.

7 v. 10 is just once removed from an 8 v. 9 and really not that big of a deal.

Especially when you consider that the committee is very willing to bump a team up or down 1 seed just to make a region work out.

7-10 seeds are pretty much the same.

My upsets are 8s and 9s.

But we're not talking Cinderella, we're talkin upsets. In an 8/9 game, one team could be the committee's 32nd best team and their opponent the 33rd best team. With 7/10 there are at least 8 teams in between 'em. It's not earth-shattering, but it's worthy of "upset" status.

But I know what you mean. 5 v. 12s are more common than you'd expect and are more fun to see...and pick correctly. I couldn't pull the trigger this year, but I thought both of the remaining 5/12 games would be good candidates.

I didn't realize until just now that I only picked two first round upsets (not counting 8/9's). One was Winthrop and the other was Gonzaga.

I almost picked VCU, but I also almost picked Creighton.

I usually pick at least one 5 to beat a 12 seed.

I did pick all of the 12's to beat the 5's except Virginia/Illinois. Which is why my brackets are looking like death warmed over right now. I hope Arkansas can pull it out tonight.

There's been at least one 12 beat a 5 every year for years now.

Of course that might get snapped tonight unless Arkansas can pull it off. But still, that's by far the best place to look for a first round upset.

2000 was the last year it didn't happen, so the 12's had a 6-year run of at least one upset.

In 06 they had 2, in 05 just one, in 04: 2; 03: 1, 02: 3, 01: 2. That's one game away from being .500 over that span. Not bad.

But this year threw a wrench in that.

On a side note, I missed every 8/9 game this year.
