Texas Tech facilities to get extensive renovations

Associated Press
LUBBOCK, Texas -- A master plan for improving Texas Tech's football stadium includes the addition of 30,000 seats over the next 20 years and a five-story building for club, retail and suite space.

Athletic director Gerald Myers presented the plan Tuesday to the facilities committee of the Texas Tech University system board of regents. Improvements to Jones AT&T Stadium would cost an estimated $40 million.

Myers also presented plans for $14 million to $21 million in upgrades for baseball and softball facilities on campus.

The plan presented to the committee had few details on funding.

"The funding for all of this is not complete at this point, but we are working diligently to do all of these things," Myers said in a story for Wednesday's Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Planners want to start adding 10,000 seats straddling the north end zone by next spring. The athletic offices, suites and retail facilities would be built on the east side of the stadium.

Proposals for softball improvements include a new fieldhouse, stands and practice facilities. For baseball, improvements would include upgrades to artificial turf, concession additions, and a new press box and eight luxury suites.

"I'm glad to see they're doing a master plan," committee chairman Bob Black said. "I think it's been long in coming, but very, very encouraging to see it coming out of the athletics department."

They should probably fix their High School stadium side first. Looks pathetic.

Also, isn't 30,000 pretty bold? They're not even filling up 50,000 at the moment. And when Leach leaves that place, the incoming HC is going to have a ****ty job to rebuild with half of the scholarship players being WR and QBs.

TT President addressing the press:

Here at Texas Tech We are known for our celebration of mediocracy. We hired an over-the-hill bipolar basketball coach to coach our marginally skilled basketball team. While he lacks sanity, he still does still have lobbying power for the NC he won 20 years ago and was able to get us into the tourney and get a player suspended for incidental contact.

But now we want to celebrate our 0 conference championship tradition here in the big 12 with a football stadium expansion. Coming off of another lower tier bowl win, we feel we can put together a stadium to house the fans who love to support this team and hope we can win many more Insight Bowl games for them.

So even though we cant fill up the class 3A high school stadium we have now, we look to our sister school in Stillwater for inspiration and say if thats whats we have to do to compete for 4th place in the South with OSU, then thats what we will do. If they build a village for 4th place, at least we can expand our stadium to match them.

how bout the turf, maybe lose that? OK? Welcome to the 1990's Techsters.

though the La Quinta Inn look of Jones Stadium isn't hardly emphasized enough.

That is one of the ugliest web sites I have ever seen. Seriously, I think I could have done just as good a job designing that site as whoever did it, and I don't have any computer background.

It makes me wonder if Texas Tech is good at anything...

I wonder where TTU will put up all their Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl wins; National Championship years; Big 12 Conference title years. They must make room for that. I wonder if the Bell Ringer will have his own area.
