I have had a large gas bill for quite some time now. I live in a small bungalow style home. Even with the first add completed we only have 1300 sq. ft. My home is all electric except for my central heat, the tank for the hot water and the heater on the swimming pool, which I only use in the Spring and some in the fall now. I even replaced my big old hot water heater tank with a brand new more efficient 30 gallon one. I keep the room temperature at 70 to 72 degrees. I wash one load of dishes a day and average 8 loads of laundry a week. Its just my me, my husband and the two little dogs. The kids are all grown and only come home a few weekends in the year and on Holidays. The youngest and a couple of grandkids will spend a week here and there. We also have a relative or two come by for a couple of days from time to time, but even that doesn't seem to raise the bill up much.

I expect a high gas bill when the pool water is being heated but when its turned off I'm still getting bills way up there in the 250.00 range. It just seems rather high to me.

drop the house temperature to 68-70
turn it down lower at night and when you're not there (electric thermostats are handy for this)

Geez, and I was complaining about 61.00 per month with all gas appliances and heat.

Then again, they pump it out of the ground about 40 miles from here as the crow flies.

Seems pretty crazy to me.

Did you check your meter against your bill and make sure they read it right?

You could switch to propane. At least that way, you would know how much you're actually using and would not be at the mercy of the gas company.

Perhaps you mean "programmable"?

My mother in law and I plan to do that this evening. She said that she has the instructions. Her bill usually runs a little less than mine and she has a bigger house and a gas range.

I bought a wood-burning insert for our fireplace this year. Lord knows I've got several lifetimes worth of wood laying around. Anyhow, our heater only kicked on maybe a half-dozen times all winter. And I'm on propane, so I don't get a gas bill, but my tank still has 80% left after filling it up last August.

I highly recommend the wood-burning stoves/inserts. Central heat simply does not provide the same type of heat. Heat from a wood fire just feels better.

Last year one month we got a $300 gas bill. Turns out they misread the meter by a LOT.
