View Full Version : I hate the military

There, I said it.

And, I hate the government they installed – a bunch of busybodies, pinheads, elitists, who hate freedom and democracy. They like to say that Thailand isn’t ready for democracy.

I mean that’s a pretty big slam against their own people.

Some of them actually believe that the provincial poor farmers would be happier if they remained poor and uneducated, so they’re actually doing them a favor.

They’ve betrayed the pro-democracy Bangkok middle class who was instrumental in the street protests that led to the military ouster of the Thaksin administration.

And, these people are in charge of writing the new constitution? They already admit that they want the prime minister to be selected instead of elected.

Some of the constitutional drafters even proposed not including the part in the previous constitution that guaranteed all young Thais the right to 12 years of free education. Why? They think it is a waste of resources. Thankfully, they are including it now, but only because they want to get the constitution ratified and they’re choosing their fights.

Still, the constitution won’t be ratified by a public referendum in July. If that’s the case, then the military junta under the Committee for National Security has the right to select from any of Thailand’s previous constitutions.

This is just setting up a very bad scenario. An old constitution will almost certainly have to be re-written by the newly-elected government formed after the general election in September or October. So, if their desired changes are to remain in place, they need to be part of the new government, which gives the very distinct appearance the military junta is clinging onto power. And, a major backlash is coming.

Several of the generals keep talking about bloody street clashes between supporters of opposing political factions. At first, I thought they were just scaremongering to keep martial law in place. Now, I think it’s a very real possibility.

Okay, the real reason for all this rant is that is that they’ve now finally gone and done it – they blocked all internet access to youtube.com.

I’m so willing to go out on the streets right now with a sign: “BRING BACK YOUTUBE, YOU BUNCH OF POOPYHEADS!”

Oh!

But the people perpetrating this on Thai people can’t be liberals. They’re not like the PC crowd, environmentalists and level-the-playing-field socialists that maybe you’re thinking about.

They’re the exact opposites. They’re the let’s-drop-pretenses-and-put-everyone-in-their-place type of people. They’re the let’s-gun-down-drug-running-suspects-and-ask-questions-later people. They’re for the status quo, a rigid social hierarchy and protect our assets first and foremost. They’re the bitch about finding a good nanny and then paying their nanny only about $150 a month. They're the scared to death that their son may be gay and if he is let's hope we keep enough social shame on him to keep him in the closet.

You should adopt the Bill of Rights.

OUHOMER, that's coming. WTF? There is some sort of Chiang Mai to Bangkok runner marathon thing going on now to bring awareness against the evils of alcohol.

What is wrong with people these days?

You should adopt the Bill of Rights.

Heh!

Let's see. The military has overthrown the government and torn up the constitution about 13-14 times over the last 100 years and twice in the last two decades, if I remember my history correctly.

The Bill of Rights doesn't stand up very well against tanks and guns.

That's why Javelins and AT-4's should be legal.

Okay, part of the reason I posted this is that I'm totally ****ed that Youtube.com is now banned in Thailand.

The other reason is that we all have to be vigilant against infringes on our liberties.

In fact, the Thai military sees itself more as the praetorian guard rather than a traditional military role of providing defense against outside threats to the kingdom.

In the US, the war on terrorism shouldn't turn us away from our liberties and freedom.

And for the record, I want to fully honor and respect our brave and courageous military troops.

On the other hand, I'm afraid of the emergence of a similar "praetorian guard" in the US disguised as protection against yet possible or impossible unseen attacks.

There are only about 10 ISPs in Thailand and they can force them all to redirect from Youtube.com to an addy of a picture of the King and Queen of Thailand. I have access to two ISPs and that's what they're doing.

That's the same thing China does in banning access to any website seen as critical.

There's plenty of paramilitary training videos on youtube. Just log on there and check it out.

Wow. It sounds like fascism-lite. And I was just telling Mrs. Rogue the other day that when she eventually visits Australia I'll go to the far east and see places like Thailand instead. I hope they get their **** together first.

Chuck it looks like you won't need any pesky news sites either since there's an "official" news site.Thai Govt. Official News Site Linkage (http://www.thaigov.go.th/en/government/government_news.aspx)

Good news folks! The powers that be have decided to allow Thais to click on youtube again.

I wonder if it was just all about ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's interview on CNN being posted on youtube. If that's the case, there has been only about 15,000 views and out of 60 million people, what was the big deal?

Make that 15,001 after they lifted the block.

I guess I hadn't fully appreciated the power of youtube in countries where press freedom is curbed.

HA HA!

I suppose you could make the same joke about every municipal government of a US city with a red light district.

I'm sure many would love to ban internet pron, as surely this current Thai military-backed government, but then they'd be the same busybody, pinhead, elitists.
