I have a raggedy tribal style dragon that I got on my right bicep when I was 16, and I've waited more than long enough to cover it up. Instead of paying buttloads to get it taken off, I figure I might as well cover it up with something halfway decent. Any ideas? Flaming naked hooker on a chopper?

My suggestion is to find the best tattoo artist you can find and ask "hey, what can you turn this into that doesn't look like crap?" Maybe suggest a couple of ideas that have meaning to you, but let them run with it and you'll probably get a better result.

whatever you decide on, you should check out cannibal graphics up on nw expressway. http://cannibalgraphics.com/gallerybody.htm
they're good, clean, and professional. i've been getting worked on by one of em for about 5 years now. they aren't pricks and won't rape you on the price like some other places will. i'm done with my shameless promotion. good luck with it either way.

i'd go with a polar bear

you rarely see polar bear tattoo's.....so if you had one, it would be original

I would have it taken off. It isn't cheap and it may take some time to get it all done. If you aren't happy with it, why add to it?

What color is it? Because the thing is, if it is black, youre not going to be able to cover it up with anything other than more black. How big is it? Like someone suggested, collect a few ideas, fin a GOOD artist, and go talk to him/her. Pay the extra money for a good artist, and research their work. If you ask to see a portfolio, make sure to look at pictures. ASK if they have pictures of their work. They might have it displayed around their shop, or they might have it online. DONT be afraid to be picky about their work. Ask them if they have had experiences doing cover-up work.

Also, remember, whatever you get it covered up with is going to have to be bigger than what you have. If it is black, though, I would NOT suggest getting it removed. Removing big pieces of work, especially the darker it is, just blurs the image. It wont remove the ink completely, and it will look like you got into a bad bic factory accident.

Seriously, be prepared to drop some big bucks to over it up, and do your research. If you hate what you have, be sure youre going to be happy with what you cover it up with.

Personally, I think, depending on how big it is, and how the tribal looks, it will probably be rather difficult to find something, especially if it has to be all black. But you can always get it covered up with more tribal. Lol. Also, you could always pick out some sort of theme and just get a sleeve done, or half sleeve.

Thats the thing, though. If its black, and big, it will look even worse. I mean, I hate arguing, bu I look at stuff like this:

Personally, you already have the tat - it looks bad, but youre good at covering it up. Why scar up your skin, and have a half blurry tattoo that will only look worse? Tattoo removal just doesnt work as well as it should, youre still going to have the marks there.

I dont know - I guess its just how badly you DONT want the tattoo. Id rather pay more money to change the tat into something I halfway like than drop all the money to have some blurry image to remind me of something I DONT like.

Scars are cool. "Tribal" tats when you ain't a member of the flippin' tribe are just...well, you know.;)

Tribal is one of those things that have morphed into a style, more than a mark of possession to a tribe.

When I got it, I wussed out and didn't get it filled in, so it should make it easier to cover up. ;) My cousin says I ought to sell it to Food Lion and get paid to wear sleeveless shirts. :D
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b162/fixinchitlins/tat.jpg

I had a guy tell me one time that he could fill it in and add some different colors, but I don't know... I have a full on Chinese dragon on the other arm (also from the teen years), so I figured I'd get something to signify my new life.

I looked into removal and I agree that it would be better to either keep it or cover it up.

Here are a couple I found that gave me some ideas.

I'm thinking I'm gonna have to go tribal since the lion pictures need blank skin behind for the dark/light contrast.

Exactly!!! See what I'm saying??? :D :D :D

I lived in Oklahoma where you couldn't get tats (I don't know if its still illegal) so two buddies and I loaded up and head to the Falls. My friend stole some money from his Dad and gave me and my other friend a little money to buy a tat. When we got there, Poke (the tattoo artists name) was just starting a huge state of TX tat on some dudes chest, so we literally waited there over 3 hours for him to finish (most was spent outside smoking weed). By the time he was done, I guess he felt bad enough that he didn't ID us. I wanted a dragon but could only afford the tribal dragon for $35. He got his Bic pen and drew the outline on instead of using the stencil and vasoline approach. By the time he got finished with the outline, he asked if I wanted it filled in. I was baked out of my mind, we had waited forever, and the outline hurt like a be-ah, so I turned down the fill in offer. Fortunately I didn't do it b/c it will make it much easier to cover up since its just lines and not big blobs of ink.

Yeah, and his was thicker. Personally I don't think that was a great cover up job since you can still see the symbol, but I think mine should be easy enough to get taken care of.

Yea, well that one in the picture is freshly done, so who knows what it looked like after it healed and was touched up.

You should have known it was a no go, though, when Pokey, or wtf ever his name was, drew the outline on with a pen. You wont see many good artists do that today, just because that ink might react differently, create an allergy, etc, or just create an overall effect that wasnt intended.
