Race For The Prize - The Flaming Lips

Let me preface my review of the opening act, the pAper chAse, by saying that I had not previously heard any of their material, save for the remix of "It's Natural to Be Afraid" from the bonus disc on Explosions in the Sky's latest album, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. So, I didn't really know what to expect from the foursome when they came out on stage. What transpired was not what I would call "music".

The keyboardist, drummer, and bass player came out first, and the keyboardist played some weird vocal sample for a couple of minutes over fuzz and distortion. Then the guitarist/lead singer came out. He looked like Guy Pearce from Memento, only not as cool. He didn't act as cool as him, either. I would describe this band as outbursts of amelodic, unorganized noise in between what appeared to me to be musings from the lead shouter about how much life sucks. No, he didn't sing; he shouted.

I immediately got bored with it and started messing with my phone to pass the time until the headliner, Explosions in the Sky, came on. 398 out of the 400 poorly dressed people crammed into Meachum Auditorium were in their seats for the duration of the pAper chAse's set. The other two guys were obviously huge fans of this abstract, nonsensical group, and they went up to the stage to stand there and headbang when the band actually did let loose with sound other than stupid poetry.

I give them a D, but only because they tried. I guess when a keyboardist, guitar player, bass player, and drummer get on stage, they really can accomplish something other than music. There's a fine line between experimenting and trying something different and just flat out ****ing up.


"Total silence to total violence."


They came. They played. They conquered. I had been looking forward to this moment since I first found out that Explosions would be playing in Norman. While the band came out to set up their equipment, at least half of the auditorium got up and went to go stand in front of the stage. I was in the 7th row and didn't feel like standing behind smelly people a foot taller than me, so I just stood in front of my seat, which was plenty close enough.


Set list:

There were a couple of other songs that I wanted to hear, but this is still a very solid set. I didn't expect them to play "With Tired Eyes...", so when they went into it, I was pleasantly surprised. I wished they could have squeezed "Memorial" or "Catastrophe and the Cure" in there, but overall I'm happy. When they started the opening notes of "Your Hand in Mine" the entire place went nuts. A solid set list plus tight, well-played songs equals an A from me. I can't wait to see them again if I ever get the chance.
