...this helped define the hillbilly culture of the 1970's and 80's.

Mar 8, 1969: Firebird Trans Am debuts

The 1970 incarnation of the "Trans Am"

38 years ago, the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was introduced on this day in 1969. The Firebird Trans Am was just one in a series of muscle cars released by Pontiac in the 1960s, including the Grand Prix and the GTO. It all began in 1959 when Pontiac hired a young car designer named John DeLorean.

A talented automobile designer, John Delorean died in 2005.

DeLorean's designs increased sales for Pontiac by 27 percent between 1962 and 1968. The Grand Prix and the Firebird accounted for half of the gain. On the basis of its muscle cars, Pontiac ruled the youth market of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The apex of the Trans Am design

The Trans Am, originally a limited model Firebird, would become a symbol in the muscle car niche of automobile manufacturing. It would also be a car that many young hillbillies who had achieved a degree of financial independence would desire among all others.;)

Immortalized in this little "road" movie starring Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason and Sally Field

You probably don't have time for hushpuppies, do you?

Smokey and the Bandit is my favorite movie. I so wanted one of those cars. And yes, I'm actually posting this, not using some sort of auto response program.

When I got my brand new 95, new body style jet black Firebird, I hard car boner for months. The cool thing about them taking it off the market is how sweet it'll be when they bring it back.

That could improve it.. For you Monte Carlo fans time to say goodbye.

Chevy to scrap Monte Carlo...again? Inside Line has confirmed with supplier sources that production of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo will cease at the end of the 2007 model year. That means the last Monte Carlo will roll off the line sometime this summer. In recent years, the Monte Carlo has been one of General Motors' biggest successes on the NASCAR stock-car racing circuit. But the two-door companion to the Chevrolet Impala sedan has not resonated with the buying public.(Edmunds.com), it was announced in October 2006 that Chevy would be going to the Impala for Car of Tomorrow [COT] races.(3-8-2007

A Chevrolet spokeswoman told Inside Line: "We did notify our dealers this week that we will cease production of the Monte Carlo on June 20, 2007.

The fact that Smokey and the Bandit is your favorite movie is not germane to the situation!:)

The God **** Germans got nothin' to do with it!

I'm kind of disappointed that Homey left out a famous Oklahoman and his Firebird from the early 1970's.

Homey didn't include it because it wasn't a Trans Am, just a Firebird.

:les: READ THE THREAD! IT'S THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE TRANS-AM! THE FIREBIRD WAS HERE BEFORE IT!

And, I really don't care if they drop the Monte Carlo or not. I don't look to be in the market for a 2 door car any time soon.

James Garner deserves more press though.

We already named "a Corridor" after him. What else do you blood suckers want? Should we rename Norman to James Garnerville? :) You are correct, A firebird is no TA!

Especially since he kicked the bucket three months later. The K car was a pos, and my mom really liked that Firebird. At least once a year my mom talks about how she wishes they would have kept it.
