With Recruiting just wrapping up and spring ball starting, I figured we could play with something a little to waste some more time til August. Who are some of the most hyped players ever out of Highschool to come to OU and flop. I am only 25 but some of the ones I remember are Brent Rawls, Rhett Bomar, Josh Roberts the kicker?

Boomer.....

The best OU player to never play a down: Brent Rawls.

Not that I am defending the cheater, Bomar had a lot of potential. Bomar would have been the starter for OU last season had he kept his head on straight and actually follow the rules setforth by the NCAA.

Moe Dampeer and Brent Rawls are a couple more that come to mind. So is Tommy Grady.

IMO Bomar would have ended up being a GREAT qb had he kept out of trouble, I was always A Bomar guy but sometimes you need to get a good kick in the junk to realize what you are screwing up!!!

Marcus Dupree. All of the talent, none of the stuff between the ears. Game over. I win.

Chris Patterson "The Mystery"...what's worse? Being talented and never playing a down or being super talented and never making it to OU?

Troy Aikman? I know he went on to be a stud but if Jason White can be considered a flop in the NFL...He never did anything great in his two years here. ;)

But seriously, Ahmed Kabba was the first person that came to mind.

but didn't Dupree live up to the hype while he played?

wasted hype maybe, but I think over-hyped is a little strong

Marcus Dupree is up there. I'm not saying he wasn't talented or he wasn't good. But he was never in shape and he didn't have good habits at OU. He was never going to be a great player at OU for those reasons. Yes he was born with natural abilities but he was never in shape at OU.

Eric Mitchel is another one. His problems were more of not having a position to play because we had the best QB to ever play the wishbone offense. Brent Rawls, Rhett Bomar, Moe Dampeer, and Chris Patterson are up there. I don't count Josh Roberts because you can find a good kicker. DiCarlo ended up pretty good for us in Roberts place.

He should be on one of those "where are they now" things.

Yes, Garrick McGee was hyped up quite a bit as a stud run-pass guy.

Jamar Mozee comes to mind.

Jowhan Poteat was supposed to be unbelievable coming out of high school. Never played that I can recall.

Fred Fleeks, same deal.

Wasn't Garrick McGee hyped pretty big? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else...He was a our best QB while on campus but Smellsofburbon/Blake forced "The next Randall Cunningham" aka Eric Moore on us. What a waste of eligibility.

On the other side of the equation, who would you consider to be the most under-hyped player to become a stud at OU? Josh for instance.

He played sparingly. I remember him making a tackle in the 04 Big XII championship game

Poteat's problem was one of a depth issue. Every year it looked like it was gonna be his year to step up someone else was brought in or recruited. He just never got a real chance. However, he made many big plays on special teams!! Downed many punts either within the opp. 5 yard line or right on the goal line. The Holiday Bowl downing at the Ducks goal line was a HUGE MO swinger for us a few years back.

Dangit! I was coming back to add him to the list. I remember him being pretty hyped, but all I remember from his time here is that he got in a fight with a teammate. Anybody remember who?

Most Hyped Ou Player Eve... 3/7/2007 08:13 PM "OU football has been around for more than five years."

If you are gonna neg then atleast know what the H*ll you are talking about. I said in my post that I am only 25 and I just named 3 players that immediately came to mind. I have been a PROUD OU FAN for as long as I could walk so dont preach to me about Ou football!

Jujuan Penny. He went to my HS and was a few years older, and thought he was the sh!znitz because he was going to OU to play reciever. I always watched and remember him catching just a few passes.. ofcourse he was a beast in HS.

I remember Buster Rhymes a a pretty darn good football player. He was the key figure as a Freshman in the 1980 "Sooner Magic" game vs. Nebraska. Checking SoonerStats, he has a 100 yard kick return on the books and he is 7th on the all time receiving yards for a season list for his Jr, season. I think I remember him getting a lot of work as a tailback.

Anyway...

Buster made a big run against NU in Lincoln in one of those years we had no business beating them....but we did. early 80's, 3rd and 9 or something and everyone on planet Earth knows we gonna run the option. but we block it, and goes about 60 yards. and we score a couple plays later.

he also stole a lot of teammates stereos as I recall....before leading teh NFL in kickoff returns for the Vikes.

Chad Davis went on to have an ok career at Washington State if I'm not mistaken.
