View Full Version : Official Music Helper Outer Thread - Music Snobs Invited!

So I'm not the most cultured music person around. I know there are plenty of music snobs around here so this thread is for people like me to post albums they like in hopes of others recommending albums that I should try out.

For example:

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine

I have always liked this album, especially the darker, slower songs like Sanctified and Something I Can Never Have.

So what would be a good choice?

you can try and find "Purest Feeling" by NIN,

it really really puts "Pretty Hate Machine" in a whole different light

are you looking only for NIN type music, or any type of good music? What else do you listen to?

Hmm. Maybe Sigur Ros? Add N To X?

Pandora is certainly not infallible, (see Yermom's infamous Mandy Moore post) but it can be very helpful. I also like Hype Machine (http://hypem.com/) a lot. Find a blogger who likes NIN and see what else they are listening to.

I have been digging David Bowie lately. You should check out the Ziggy Stardust albums.

For something mellow, Gomez - How We Operate

Anything really. I wanted a forum of sorts. If you will.

So if I say I like Miles Davis, but I only have Kind of Blue, what else might I like that is similar?

you'll get some Charlie Mingus if you know what's good for you.

If you have Kind Of Blue, you really don't need anything else, but for Miles I'd stick with his pre-experimental stuff. Seriously.

Have you read the "greatest albums" threads? Also, if you snoop through the WAYLT threads you can find some greatness. BSG and BRJ usually listen to stuff worth checking out. I secretly use them as music references sometimes and check out some of the bands they post in those threads.

Bitches Brew

As far as the NIN thing, I used to be a huge fan of all that was industrial. Try some old Machines of Loving Grace. If you want a harder edge with a little more beat, try Front 242 or Ministry.
