OKLAHOMA 7, OHIO 2

The University of Oklahoma® Hockey club found its offense, albeit a day later than expected, as the Sooners pounded the Ohio University Bobcats in a consolation game Thursday at the ACHA D1 National Championship Tournament in Youngstown, Ohio. The Sooners struck first when Kevin Kennedy scored from the point on an early power play at 2:17 of the first period to put the Sooners up 1-0. There was no more scoring in the period but plenty of hard-hitting action. Sooners forward Owen Brewer was checked into the boards by an Ohio defenseman and shattered his left arm. Sooners’ defenseman Greg Curtiss was on the receiving end of an Ohio check and suffered some cuts over his left eye along with a mild concussion. Brewer’s line mate, Adrian Borchgrevink, exacted a little revenge when he knocked Ohio forward Clay LaBrosse into next week with a crunching elbow and check that left LaBrosse looking like a deer on ice with a severe concussion. After the first period physicalities, the teams focused on hockey for the rest of the game. In the second period, Ohio started off with at least five full minutes of 5-on-3 power play action yet could not solve the Sooners’ penalty killing defense. Shortly after the Sooners got back to full strength, Keith Denton and Jordan Novak scored to give the Sooners a three goal lead. The lead could have been larger but Kevin Kennedy missed a penalty shot which was awarded when an Ohio player threw his stick as Kennedy was bearing down on a breakaway scoring opportunity. Ohio got on the scoreboard late in the period to make the score 3-1 at the end of 40 minutes of play. In the third, the Sooners capitalized on two breakaway chances by Kennedy and Denton to give OU a 5-1 lead and the rout was on. Denton capped his hat-trick on the day when he scored short-handed off a slapper from the right circle and Phil Ritter tipped a Danny Force power play blast from the point into the Ohio net to give OU a 7-1 lead. Ohio scored a short-handed goal with 35 seconds left in the game to make Thursday’s final 7-2.

Sooners’ goaltender Ryan Anderson stopped 26 of 28 Ohio shots. Ohio starting goaltender Ryan Baksh stopped 12 of 15 shots before being pulled in after Oklahoma’s third goal in favor of Derek DeFelice, who stopped 14 of 18 Sooners shots. OU was 2 for 13 on the power play while Ohio was 0 for 11 with the man advantage.

The Sooners win caps a record-setting season for Oklahoma, which finishes the season 31-5-0 and ranked 9th in the Nation. Ohio, which was No. 2 in the Nation coming into the tournament, drops to 30-12-0 and finishes the season ranked at No. 10.
