:D The new record is 7971 feet by Canadian Corporal Rob Furlong of the Third Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Regiment using a McMillan TAC-50 on a Taliban fighter in Afghanistan in 2002. That's a mile and a half folks.

These things take time to get all certified and stuff, but zang! There is no way Muhamed even heard the shot that took his head off.:D

Is this a new definition for a Furlong?

could someone who has one of those measurement converters let us know how many miles 7971 feet is?

I'm really more worried about the distance in kilometres seeing as how they guy's Canadian and all. :D

yeah, but roughly how far was it?

I wonder what our battalions & regiments would be called if we had the same system...
2nd battalion of the Doogie Houser Mess Kit Repair Regiment or
3rd Regimental Combat Team of the Beyonce Fusilers.

It's actually pretty smart. I served with those Patricia's and here's the dealio; the Brits (and by extension, many of the Canadians) ensure royal patronage for their regiments by naming them for some noble person -- or at least declaring some royal bigwig honorary "colonel".

While HRH Princess Patricia lived (she was one of Queen Victoria's daughters) she always made sure those guys had good gear, vittles and plenty of liquor in the officers mess and lots of beer for the men because they were "her" regiment.

Actually, YOU have a measurement converter. It's called Google. One of the things a lot of people don't know about Google is that it has a pretty neat calculator feature. Just type in the informaton you want to have converted, hit search, and whammo!

pfffft. He didn't just hit the moon, he hit it dead-center.

And for anyone whose ever done long-distance shooting, this is damn near unbelievable. About the only place you're gonna have a mile-and-a-half open shot is in the desert. Or across a big-assed ravine or something. And do you know how small Habib looks from that far? Damn near invisible to the naked eye. Maybe a spek, smaller than a fly, on the horizon.

I've shot prairie dogs from about 500 yards with my .22-250, and you can't even see them without big-time optics. This is 5-times that distance. ****ing wow.

In 1967, Carlos Hathcock USMC set a record for the longest combat kill with a Browning M2 .50 BMG machine gun mounting a telescopic sight. The distance was 2,286 meters (2,500 yards) or 1.42 miles. Hathcock was one of several individuals to utilize the Browning M2 machine gun in the sniping role. This success has led to the adoption of the .50 BMG cartridge as a viable anti-personnel and anti-equipment sniper round.

The record stood until 2002, when it was broken during Operation Anaconda by a Canadian three-man sniper team led by Master Corporal Graham Ragsdale from the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). The new record was set by Corporal Rob Furlong with a shot of 2,430 meters (2,657 yards) from a McMillan TAC-50 Long-Range Sniper Weapon on a Taliban fighter.

Carlos is still the f'ing man.

i mean, i bet you can fire...one mississippi...two mississippi....dead.

the .50 BMG round leaves the muzzle at about 2900fps. So you're correct.;)

Oh, that would be so suh-weet! And knowing Canadians, they would hang it in the NCO club.;)

Of course, if it was a headshot, nothing left to mount after a .50 impacts the noggin.

Leaves the muzzle at that velocity. It's rapidly slowing down as it progresses downrange. So you could probably get out a "take that you murdering ****" if you talk real fast.

You know another thing about these .50 cal rounds, all you need to do is hit body. Hit mohammed in the shoulder and he's shoulder/armless and will most likely bleed to death or die from shock.

I was reading some stuff on Pat Tillman, and he was hit by .50 cal rounds. Literally dismembered him. Bad news.

At +7,000 feet a .50 cal BMG is probably traveling just under the speed of sound ~1100fps at sea level. The Haj probably had enough time to hear a high pitched whizzing sound before it popped his chest open.

So, important lesson for Achmed. Always keep moving. If you run around all the time and never stay in one place more than three seconds, a Canadian corporal will find it difficult to kill you from a mile and a half out. ;)

as much as taxidermy costs you would think they would at least brush the dude's teeth for proper display

I thought it was against the Geneva convention to shoot a human with a .50 cal. Guess I thought wrong. Maybe it's just a no-no to shoot'm with a .50 machine gun?
