I have fished in the Gulf once in my life and that was twenty years ago. Anyone have any advice for things I should pack or watch out for?

BTW - We're going to take a boat from Nawlins to fish for yellow tail tuna. Anything else I might catch?

When he was young youd not find him doing well in school,
His mind would turn unto the waters.
Always the focus of adolescent ridicule,
He has no time for farmers daughters.
Alienated from the clique society,
A lonely boy finds peace in fishing.
His mother says john this is not the way lifes supposed to be.
Dont you see the life that you are missing?
And he says...
When I grow up I want to be,
One of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman.

Now years gone by we find man that rules the sea.
He sets out on a dark may morning .
To bring his catch back to this small community.
He doesnt see the danger dawning.
Four hours up, oh the ocean swelled and swelled,
The fog rolled in it started raining.
The starboard bow. oh my God were going down!
The do not hear his frantic mayday.
And he says
When I grow up I want to be,
One of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman.
Ill live and die a fisherman.
Calling john the fisherman.

Might it be yellow-fin tuna instead of yellow-tail? If the trolling for tuna doesn't work, suggest you tie up to an oil platform, fish with bait for snappers, groupers and amberjacks. PM me if you want. I've done a lot of salt water fishing.

I fished in a boat off the coast of Aruba a few years back.

I landed a 75 lb King Marlin.

It was really cool until the guy dragged it in the boat.

It sat there for a second and then started thrashing.

I wished I had a shotgun at that moment.

If you're leaving from N.O., you always have to watch out for full-blown AIDS.

We took a charter from south of NO back when there was a south of NO. It was fun. We caught several big tunas. I got an 85 pounder. We also caught several Mahi Mahi on light tackle, too. They're a blast to catch. Seems like we caught one or two long skinny silver fish, too. I can't remember what they were. We brought home two huge coolers of tuna.

We took dramamine and drank plenty of water.

Watch out for jaguar sharks. Pack some dynamite.

And a red stocking cap. And a Speedo.

did I mention that everything I know about deep-sea fishing I learned from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou?

I am guessing King Mackerel. Which would probably be the long skinny fish that Boarder couldn't remember the name of. Good advice given to charter a guide boat. They have all the equipment and bait for you and they even have a master baiter on board so you make sure you get it on appropriately.:O

If you apply enough patches you can skip the sunscreen part.

Word.

Even if you think you won't need it - take it. I went a couple of years ago off the Florida Keys and had an awesome time but only after the Dramamine kicked in.

That water's a lot more crazy than you might think. Don't chance getting your trip ruined by pukery...

To be honest...

After my turn fishing I got seasick from all the Mai Tai's from the night before and wasn't in great shape. However I know the fish had one of those swords on the front so it wasn't a mackerel.

The others caught Tuna and mahi mahi and I think there was a 50 lb mackerel.

I'd have to find the Honeymoon pics to make sure...I'm just not wanting to relive those photos right now. :D

Drink LOTS of beer.THIS IS SOUND ADVICE, but only if your interest is in being on your knees, hanging your head over the side of the boat, and PUKING YOUR GUTS OUT.

i'd suggest you stay over and go bowfishing in the marsh at night.

probably the most fun i've ever had hunting/fishing and this is a great time of year do to it. i've been blue water and bay fishing out of new orleans and it was a lot of fun, but nothing compared to the bowfishing.

Are you chartering a boat or will it be a trip with a friend? If chartering they will have everything you need. You'll ride right by me on the way out if I'm at work. I work by the lighthouse at the pilot station.

Watch out for ships! They're big and can't stop like cars.

Some of our pilots went offshore last week and got a nice yellowfin tuna.

When are you going? I may be able to get some advice on good tuna areas from one of the pilots.

If you decide to go bottom fishing, look for older oil platforms. I'd get to about 200 feet of water for grouper and snapper. Cigar Minnows are the bait of choice.

I've worked on boats and platforms in the oilfield down here for quite afew years. If you want to pm me any specific questions feel free.
