Three men remained jailed Tuesday after an Oklahoma City pawn shop owner shot and wounded two of them Monday as they demanded money from his employees at gunpoint.

The robbery attempt was at about 6 p.m., and was captured on a surveillance camera inside Joe's Pawn and Bargain Center (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Bargain+Center&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION), 1825 NE 23.
Three suspects were arrested in connection with the robbery. They are: Robert Jamel Pennington (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Robert+Jamel+Pennington&CATEGORY=PERSON), 17, , shot in the shoulder; Kentrell Smith, 16, shot in the left elbow and left thigh, and Garrick Lee Thomas (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Garrick+Lee+Thomas&CATEGORY=PERSON), 17, who was not shot, police said. Pennington (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Robert+Jamel+Pennington&CATEGORY=PERSON) and Smith were treated for gunshot wounds at an Oklahoma City hospital.

Mike Wilbanks (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Mike+Wilbanks&CATEGORY=PERSON) owns the pawn shop. He said he was in an office when he was alerted the robbery was unfolding. His office looks out on the sales floor through a one-way mirror; people on the store side see their own reflection, but he can see them through the glass.

Wilbanks (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Mike+Wilbanks&CATEGORY=PERSON) didn't notice the robbers at first. It wasn't until an employee came bursting into the office, white-faced and breathless, that he learned what was happening. He pulled a 9 mm Sig Sauer (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=SIGARMS+Inc.&CATEGORY=COMPANY) semi-automatic out of his desk drawer and peered through the glass. He could see his employee, Daniel Ray (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Daniel+Ray&CATEGORY=PERSON), standing on the far side of the counter with a gun to his head. He could see another employee pawing money out of the register. And he could see the gunman.

"I got him in my sights,” said Wilbanks (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Mike+Wilbanks&CATEGORY=PERSON), 39, "but I didn't want to endanger anyone else. At some point, he started waving the gun around at other employees, telling them to give him the cash, and my manager backed way, way up, completely out of my line of fire. As soon as that happened, I had a clean shot on him, and I just started pulling the trigger.” Wilbanks (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Mike+Wilbanks&CATEGORY=PERSON)' gun was loaded with special safety rounds designed to prevent stray bullets from penetrating walls or other hard surfaces and accidentally striking innocent victims. Wilbanks (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Mike+Wilbanks&CATEGORY=PERSON) pulled the trigger four times, shattering the mirror and apparently striking the gunman, then fired four more times as the robbers fled.

reminds me of a case i worked at fort hood.....a young soldier goes into a local mom and pop convenience store in Rosebud, Texas....grabs a six pack of beer and walks up to the counter....clerk asks for ID, soldier lays his wallet on the counter, pulls out small gun......"gimme all your money".......clerk being a good country texan has his own gun and reaches for it.......which spooks the soldier who then shoots the clerk in the face....clerk falls to the floor with blood everywhere.....soldier runs out to his car, then realizes "oh crap, i forgot my wallet on the counter"......he runs back in, clerk puts the butt of his pistol up on the counter and fires one shot

hits the soldier square between the eyes and drops him dead

Heh,

My roommate, after college, worked for that place a couple of years ago and had been robbed at one in Norman 5 years earlier with two guys carrying Tech 9's.

if somebody walks in with a tech 9, you just give them whatever they want

by the time you reach for whatever you've got under the counter, they've got many rounds fired off

I was robbed while working at a Convenience Store in Norman. Infact I even saw the footage of it on on of those "worlds wildest police video's" tv shows...

Weren't there a couple of women working a liquor store in OK a few years ago who grabbed up a couple of bottles and beat this robber over the head?

I like it when the time between the crime and the punishment is severely shortened.

I don't agree. You're letting the robber get to decide whether or not he's going to kill you after you hand over the money. I'm not a Baptist, I don't fly hot-air baloons, and I take my fate in my own hands. 10-4:texan:

obviously my advice doesnt apply to everybody, if you feel confident enough, then pull the trigger

but there are ALOT of much more passive people working in those jobs....thats who i was talking about
