there's a fine line musicians have to walk when they are covering another musicians songs to get it right. if they change it too much, a lot of times it's not enjoyable at all because it doesn't resemble the original (like the Fiery Furnaces cover of Norwegian wood). if they don't change it at all, it just sounds like celebrity karaoke (Gnarls Barkley's cover of Gone Daddy Gone)

what's your favorite cover?

I'm going to have to think about it for a while to come up with a favorite, but I almost always like punk covers.

is there any double pedal action? i saw them at the House of Blues in Anaheim a few weeks ago, the double pedal was gnarly.

correct me if i am wrong but, EWF covered a McCartney tune I believe. I think it was shining star. Or McCartney coverd EWF, but I doubt that. It may not have been shining star. Either way I've heard both do the same song, but i cant remember which it was. i like it though. i feel like i'm not making much sense right now. three intense gigs in three days will do that to a person. speaking of music, i was in the big band that backed up debbie boone today. you know, pat boone's daughter, and rosemary clooney's daughter in law. she did alot of clooneys famous tunes, plus you light up my life. it was sweet. i can now say i've played for a grammy winning artist. plus she is hawt.

no double pedal, they sort of did it as a power metal ballad - which was sweet since the singer's voice is about 3 octaves lower than the original tune. Plus they turned the flute part into grungy power chords.

"How I could Just Kill a Man" (Cypress Hill)- Rage agains the Machine
"Word Up"(Cameo) - Korn
"Darling Nikki" (Prince) - Foo Fighters (Prince)
"Another Brick in the Wall" - Pearl Jam (Pink Floyd) (they also do "Dock of the Bay" pretty well)

Generally metal/hard rock/nu rock bands tend to do good covers because they cover something from outside their genre

wasn't it originally a cover, that then turned into a collaboration. I know Rage covered "How I could just Kill a man" on renegades, but there's also a live track on the album with Rage and Cypress Hill performing together.

Similar to Run DMC doing "Walk This Way". I see a cover as a tribute to the original artist, which both Anthrax and Run DMC did, even if you have the originals helping out.

Love Buzz (Shocking Blue) - Nirvana
Here she comes now (Velvet Underground) - Nirvana
Money (Barret Strong) - Beatles
One Bourbon... (John Lee Hooker) - George Thorogood
Red Headed Stranger (Traditional) - Willie Nelson

I'm sure there are a bunch more, but its early.

If a band that writes their own songs is going to do a cover, it needs to be unique from the original version. If I'm in a bar and a cover band is performing, it needs to be a spot on replication of everything I've heard on the original album. Cover bands that try to trick it up just tick me off.

The King of Covers. I coulda swore I got turned on to this guy from this board, to be honest.

Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine (http://www.richardcheese.com)

What's funny is that while yes, 'cheesy', he's got a damn good set of musicians and in a good number of tunes, swings pretty hard. If you get a chance, check his cover of Van Halen's 'Hot For Teacher' and his Sinatra-esque rendition of Alanis Morrissette's 'You Oughta Know'.

So yeah, parody and all that stuff. But these guys seriously swing.

All Along the Watchtower was a good Bob Dylan song but Hendrix turned it into a great song.

Hey Joe was an unknown song that Hendrix made a huge hit also.

LittleWingSooner

Here's the Zepp covers I could come up with

Led Zeppelin I
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You-Joan Baez did the song they covered but they didn't know who it was originally done by at that time.

You Shook Me and Your Time is gonna come was a Dixon cover

Dazed and Confused, which was a complete rewrite of an unknowned named Holmes. It does have the same sound as a song, but the lyrics are completely different. So I'm not sure it counts.

How Many More Times does contain lyrics from Albert King's "The Hunter" but the song itself isn't a cover.

Led Zeppelin II
Whole Lotta Love was another Dixon cover. But it was basically a rip off at the time. The Dixon song was You Need Love

Bring it on Home is a cover of a Sonny Blake song.

The Lemon Song was a cover of Howlin' Wolf's Killin' Floor

Led Zeppelin III had 2

Bron Y-Ar Stomp was a complete remake of a song by Bert Jansch and Gollows Pole was a Lead Belly remake

Zeppelin IV had a remake of Memphis Mennie's When the Levee Breaks

Presence had Nobody's Fault but Mine which was a Blind Willie Johnson song

Outside that there's a few tip of the caps. The Crunge was in the style of James Brown, Boogie with Stu is a Richie Valens nod, Hot Dog tips it's had to country music. But not any true covers.

Traveling Riverside Blues is really a Led Zeppelin song. They only took 1 or two lines from the Robert Johnson song.

Aretha Franklin's Respect was a cover of an Otis Redding tune. We should all be shot down for not mentioning that one.

Also on the Metallica page, they covered a whack of songs on the re-release of "Garage Days", and did a nice job on Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy" as well.

Motley Crue-"Teaser" by Tommy Bolan is another good cover.

Crue's version of Helter Skelter is much MUCH better than the one on U2's Rattle and Hum.

What, you don't like Bono's "****, I just ran a marathon" rendition?

What, you don't like Bono's "****, I just ran a marathon" rendition?

it's a really plodding effort, to me*. I DO really like God (part II) on Rattle and Hum though. and that scene in the movie with BB King is classic, where he basically tells the Edge: "man, i don't know no chords....just start playing".

* it's also ironic since it was about exactly that time (87-88) that in every interview Bono went out of his way to say they were better than the Beatles....and even did the rooftop concert deal in one of the Joshua Tree videos like the Beatles did at the Abbey Road/Apple Studio. kinda pitiful, inna way.

another plodding effort is Lenny Kravitz's American Woman. the win goes to the Guess Who in a TKO.

Another vote for Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies.

Tom Jones' version of Kiss (Prince, duh).

Lucky Peterson does a great Purple Rain (again, duh).

Ike and Tina Turner--Proud Mary (CCR)

Cheap Trick--Ain't That a Shame (Fats Domino)

Presidents of the USA--Video Killed the Radio Star (Buggles)

Awesome. Good work. I had just gotten the cd, too, so I really didn't get to listen to much of it.

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, and Dwight Yoakam's cover of Suspicious Minds are probably my top two.

Well played. Cash's cover of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails is probably one of my all time favorite covers. Amazing song.

The only Zeppelin cover I've ever liked was Dancing Days by STP, and I saw someone had already listed that one. Well played on that one, too.

I'm currently into Cat Scratch Fever by Pantera. Originally by Nugent. Also, I like Mississippi Queen by Ozzy. I forgot who originally sang that one. Def Leppard's cover of Rock On by David Essex(I think) is pretty good, too.
