OKLAHOMA 5, MINOT STATE 4 (SO)

The No. 5-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club survived a wild affair against Minot State University Friday night, winning 5-4 in a shootout. Minot drew first blood, scoring at 7:11 of the first period. The Sooners then scored two short-handed goals in the span of 28 seconds. An aggressive forecheck by Keith Denton paid off when he stole the puck with the Minot goalie behind the net and slipped the puck into an empty net to tie the game at 1-1 at 13:46 of the first. Adrian Borchgrevink intercepted a Minot breakout pass and walked in all alone on the MSU net, ripping the puck past the Beavers goalie for a 2-1 OU lead. MSU tied the game at two barely a minute into the second period. Kyle Allan blasted a shot into the Minot net at 13:29 to give the Sooners a 3-2 lead that would hold to the end of the period. In the third, Minot scored on the power play to tie the game 3-3. Phil Ritter broke the tie with a backhand power play goal in the slot to put OU up 4-3 at the 9:56 mark. However, Minot scored just 21 seconds later to tie the game at 4-4. The score remained tied at the end of regulation and the teams moved on to overtime. After a scoreless five-minute overtime, which saw some interesting and unique decisions by the on-ice officials regarding the number of players per side in the extra period, the teams headed to a shootout to decide the winner.

This shootout saw Minot‘s first shooter denied by Oklahoma goaltender Ryan Anderson while OU’s first shooter, Doug Gebbie, scored to give the Sooners a 1-0 lead in the shootout. Minot tied the shootout with their second shooter and OU’s Adrian Borchgrevink missed his attempt. The third shooter for Minot missed but OU’s Michael Gray scored to give the Sooners a 2-1 shootout lead. The fourth shooters for Minot and OU both missed their attempts, and Anderson stoned Minot’s fifth and last shooter to win the shootout for OU and give the Sooners a 5-4 shootout victory over the visiting Beavers.

Anderson stopped 27 of the 31 MSU shots he faced on the evening while his counterpart, Minot State’s Brett Thomas, officially made 25 saves on 30 shots. OU was 1 for 6 on the power play while Minot was 1 for 8 with the man advantage.

The win improves OU’s record to 27-4-0 while Minot State drops to 19-10-0. The Sooners face Minot State again on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 P.M.
