I was thinking back to sooneron's thread about the reunion, and i'm not a big reunion guy....but there some who questioned the musicianship of the Police. and that's nonsense. Stew Copeland is a favorite of damn near every drummer i've ever known (especially jazz drummers)....and he has the best sharp snare sound of anyone outside Sgt. Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour (those are the bench). the vid above has some nice shots of him and his long sticks and about 2 minutes in him hitting the crash with the middle of the stick...is inventive just like the old multi-instrumental blues players.
Sting was an inventive, creative bass player. too bad he acts like he's the only person on planet earth who ever read a book (to paraphrase Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden). especially on the early records, bass really is the melody line....in a trio.
and Andy Summers is a really clever guitarist, notice you don't see any of his stuff completely in the vid. and he was in the gawdamned Animals. the House of the Rising Sun Animals.
and you have to love trio's. the Police, Cream, early ZZ Top, Meat Puppets come to mind.
