Did anyone here save their baby's cord blood?

And which bank did you use?
It sounds like a great idea. One where you can't spend too much.

Science types, what are your thoughts?

:O

We were supposed to. But got so excited in the delivery room we forgot.

It's your responsibility to remember to do it, not the Dr.'s.

We never even got the option and had never heard about it until after the fact. We probably would have as well had we known....

Actually, at our hosp. we can take care of the remembering at pre-registration. If we go with viacord, the hospital has kits on hand in case we forget to bring the whatever it is.

Well, when I cut the cord I got blood on my shirt - the blood stain is still on said shirt. Does that count?

The NIH estimates that only one in 200,000 children will develop a disease that could be treated with a cord blood or bone marrow transplant.

200K doesn't exactly sound like lottery like odds to me. Plus, they are still finding new uses for it. Not to mention, We would donate after a certain amount of time.

We did, four years ago. I spoke to my dad's oncologist about this as the cord blood is being used a lot in the treatment of leukemia and other blood cancers. He explained that it is highly recommended for certain minority groups. The reason is that there is a lot of supply of cord blood in the US for caucasians. So if you are white, the liklihood of finding a donor match is pretty good, even if you don't save it from your child. It is much less so for minorities. I would speak to your pediatrician and OB GYN about this as well as an oncologist if you have access. I don't remember who we use but it isn't the cheapist nor the most expensive. Our OB GYN was not in favor of it four years ago. Now, she recommends it to ALL of her patients.

We didn't do it. Seemed like the ratio of cost to liklihood of use was awfully low.

No, momma eats the placenta. Y'all need to come out to the ranch. We had another calf last night. First thing momma does is lick the baby to get the membrane off, then eat the cord and placenta. I tried to get a bite but she damn near ran me over.

And people who actually cook/eat placenta are ****ing whack.

Yup...

Raw is the only way to eat placenta.

Placenta shampoo, placenta face cream, placenta lotion... ...it's a multi-billion dollar business.

I am so disappointed that I know this, BTW.

Doubtful, if he had, he would have sold the pictures to People for a couple million.

It's not cheap. One reason for us doing it is that the wife is of Jewish heritage and there are some issues linked to past "tribes". Not crazy issues, but issues nonetheless.

You can also donate it for a very nominal fee, which we would do if not keeping it for ourselves.

sooneron
2/14/2007, 05:48 PM
Of course, my jewish wife may just eat the baby right then and there according to some of you hillbillies.

We're trying to get pregnant right now, so it's something that I'll need to look into sooner or later.

Typical SO thread, I started out curious, indeed learned something new, ended up being a little grossed out, and can't get out of here fast enough.
