Turns out it is German for fighter. My mother's maiden name is eastern German and means literally to forge and/or hammer. Also a variant of my surname ironically enough was carried by the General that surrendered France.

Kampfer?

Schmiede?

My maternal grandmother is second-generation German. Her name auf deutsch doesn't have a translation in English.

Mine is a version of a German last name Treisch. Not sure if it has any meaning, but I think it comes from an occupational-type name for someone who threshed grain for a living perhaps?

Any German speakers in the house?

Mine means pretty.

I imagine that there was some weird point in time that my ancestors were trying to think up a good last name and was totally stumped. There must of been some time pressure and the official said: "you gotta come up with something pretty soon". They dropped the soon and kept the pretty.

This is a true story. One of my best friends last name means last name. Thais didn't have last names until the first part of the early 1900s. My friend's grandfather was a court official and he was in line for the King of Thailand to give his family an auspicious name. As it turned out, he was the last person that day to receive a last name and he got "last name."

My maiden name was Welch for a spinner of threads.
My married last name is German for a very nice house.

Our wedding announcement in the paper was sent to Johnny Carson for airing on the Tonight Show.
