i had to laugh on tonites "to catch a predator" episode

they're playing text from the chat log transcripts and throw in an audible chuckle everytime "lol" appears

then they're talking about evidence found in some perp's car, and they mention KY jelly, and feel the need to further clarify it by saying "a sexual lubricant"

heh

That math teacher was obvious. If I had randomly seen that guy on the street my first thought would be, "child molester."

But I tend to make wild judgments about people I don't know based purely on their physical appearance.

These people are so stupid. I love it when they ask if they are cops or are working with the people from Dateline. They are so suspicious, yet still come over.

They were told that all the criminals were in Dallas County and wouldn't come out to Collin County. Duh.

Really? Morans! The ones I've seen, they haven't really shown any neighbors although I often wondered what the neighbors thought while it was going on.

Anyone see last night's episode? It took place in Murphy, TX (about 5 miles from my house). :eek:

And, no, I wasn't arrested.

The biggest deal was that the Asst DA of Rockwall County was busted and when they went to his house to arrest him, he shot himself in the head right in front of the cops. Unbelievable.

The DA's sister went off on the city council blaming them and Dateline for her brother's death. When they got the DA's computer, it had so much security on it that they had to send it to Sony to get it unlocked. It sounds like maybe he was involved in a lot worse stuff than just what he was caught doing on the show.

Oh, and another thing that came out that I thought was interesting is that in Texas, if you even solicit sex with someone who's underage online, it's the same as if you showed up at their door. I'm guessing there were a lot of perverts watching last night's show and doing some serious sweating.

I saw part of that one. WTF are these people thinking.. I think it should be the death sentence for these whack jobs. Maybe then they would think twice before trying it with a 13 year old or younger.

so far the winnar of the 'best line' for me was when asked
<dateline>
'what are you doing here'?

<scum bag>
'i was just chatting with this girl online and she said she was home alone. so i came here and was going to wait for her parents to get home and inform them that their daughter was in adult chat rooms, and how dangerous that is.'

dateline didn't buy it either...

honorable mention was the clown when the cops were tackling him:

'but i havent done anything yet'!!!!

Actually, I was wondering if there aren't some sickos out there kind of getting off on the whole thing, especially on the dramatized IM conversations. They get pretty graphic. But hey, if they are actually getting convictions out of it, and/or scaring creepy dudes away from trying anything for fear it might be a setup, then I'm all for it.

originally there were no laws that you could be arrested for "just talking/chatting".......you had to actually go for the meet....its nice that they've changed that

i'd love to see a follow up episode where they look at actual sentences handed down.......my thoughts are that the first time offenders are getting off (jail time) pretty light

Viking Kitten
3/7/2007, 02:58 PM
They actually brought that up last night; they said the longest sentence they've gotten so far is five years. I believe they said next week's show is going to go more into that. I'm interested to hear that information too. It seems like the fact that no minor was actually involved would be kind of a sticky point.

well, thats the interesting thing about this....and i would expect somebody to challenge those statutes, because the reality is that they're talking to an adult........its all fantasy based.....

while i never participated in stings, we did have more than a few soldiers that found themselves in the similar types of situations.....never saw any of them get more than 6 months in jail

i think its great they've adapted the statutes to help law enforcement, but they need to put a heavier sting in the penalty part
