From 1800 on is my main focus but I am interested in earlier stuff if it comes in the same book.

Find a decent biography of Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar. He and Santy Annie is Latin American history in the 19th century.

Born in Blood and Fire is a good concise history of Latin America. I'd call it a "detailed survey" of the region. I had to read it for a Latin American Geography course in college. I remember it being a good intro to the region's history and a relatively quick read. http://www.amazon.com/Born-Blood-Fire-Concise-History/dp/0393927695/sr=8-1/qid=1171339808/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-7478523-6566435?ie=UTF8&s=books

I thought Hugh Thomas had written a book on Latin America, but I guess not. He has written a history of Cuba and the Spanish Civil War, both of which are considered the definitive histories of both in the English language. Both very long books. He's also written a well-received history of the slave trade.
