SOONERS WEEKLY
For the Week of February 12, 2007

NO. 5 SOONERS SWEEP NO. 20 ARIZONA
OKLAHOMA HOSTS RESURGENT SQUAD FROM MINOT STATE THIS WEEKEND

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The University of Oklahoma® hockey club (26-4-0) host a pair of games this weekend against the Beavers from Minot State University (19-8-0). Game time at the Blazers Ice Centre on Friday, February 16th is at 7:30 P.M. The second game of the series will be played on Sunday, February 18th at 2:00 P.M. These upcoming games will be the first time that Minot State and Oklahoma have played one another.

LAST WEEK’S OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma easily defeated No. 20 Arizona (13-14-0) twice this past weekend. On Friday night, Arizona scored the first goal of the game but the Sooners rallied with five unanswered goals to win a penalty-marred contest by a score of 5-1. Oklahoma was whistled for 42 minutes in penalties on the evening while Arizona’s undisciplined squad racked up a total of 124 minutes in the sin bin. The next evening, Oklahoma scored the first eight goals of the game en route to an 8-2 demolition of Arizona, all but eliminating any hope that Arizona had of making it to Nationals this season. Justin Hall had three goals for OU on the weekend while Owen Brewer, Luke Rose and Adrian Borchgrevink scored two goals each for the Sooners against Arizona. Matt Pangrac, Ryan Kenney, Doug Gebbie and Michael Gavranovic also supplied goals for OU this weekend.

GREEK NIGHT AT OU HOCKEY – Friday, February 16th is Greek Night at OU Hockey. All OU students who wear their Greek letters get in to the OU Hockey game against Minot State for only $3.00. In addition, those students showing their Greek pride will be eligible to be selected for intermission contests and the chance to win some great OU Hockey swag. Flyers and handouts for Greek Night at OU Hockey will be posted and distributed on campus.

RANKINGS – The Sooners are currently ranked 5th in the most recent ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking. The next ACHA D1 ranking will be released on this Friday and will determine the 16 teams who will compete at the 2006-2007 ACHA Division 1 National Championship Tournament. The Regular Season Champions from the Central States Collegiate Hockey League, Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association, and Eastern Collegiate Hockey League will receive an automatic berth. The 2006-2007 ACHA Division 1 National Championship Tournament will be hosted by Kent State University and take place February 28 - March 4, 2007 at the Ice Zone in Youngstown, OH.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS – The Beavers are coached by the effervescent Bernie Lynch and come to Oklahoma riding a 13-game winning streak dating back to November 23rd. Despite having one of the better winning percentages in ACHA D1 hockey, the Beavers find themselves just outside of the Nationals picture as they would be ranked 24th if the ACHA D1 Coaches rankings were extended that far. A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Coach Lynch recruits heavily from the Great White North as evidenced by his 25-man MSU roster, which is comprised of 21 Canadians and four U.S.-born players. The Beavers beat archrival North Dakota State twice this past weekend by scores of 6-3 and 7-1. Minot State is led in scoring by forward Wade Regier who has 15 goals and 15 assists for a total of 30 points. Regier is followed by forward Trevor Popowich (16-11-27), forward Jarod Eagles (10-13-23) and forward Andrew Figueira (8-15-23). Goaltenders Steve Norris (3.17 GAA) and Brett Thomas (2.63) are Minot State’s main goaltenders this season.
